Alcon,

Apparently some of us have the option of overclocking our Pentium M FSB's from the 5720 BIOS and some of us do not. This despite having identical BIOS versions which makes this a little strange.

The purpose of this thread is to try and identify a pattern or trend of which 5720's have this option and which do not. This should reveal why some have this option and why some do not.

The explicit option I am refering to is under "ADAVANCED CHIPSET CONTROL" in your 5720 BIOS. Once you enter into this feature set, some of us have an option at the very bottom called, "SYSTEM FREQUENCY". This option allows you to OC your Pentium M FSB by as much as 15%. Now this is not anything surprising for the Pentium M, even at completely default voltage levels, the PM has proven time and time again it can be OC'd this much without issue. Presumably, this is why you also see no voltage option, it doesn't need it and would actually be more dangerous to add this as an option then to simply negate it. (See Photos)

Of course as I have also mentioned in my review of the 5720-V, every chip will respond differently to OC'ing. This becomes another question in this mystery, did Sager initially provide this option knowing the reputation of the PM and how highly OC'able it is, then thought better of it and simply removed it later on to avoid RMA issues?

Let's see if we can dig a little deeper and try and identify a trend here...

PLEASE ANSWER THE POLL QUESTIONS AS HONESTLY AS POSSIBLE AND THE POLL IS "MULTIPLE CHOICE".

I have the I have the 5720-C and no OC in the BIOS

Perhaps you should add an option, "I don't have the OC option in BIOS"?

As I see allot of people (including myself) on this and other forums that just don't have the option.
I contacted the Dutch Clevo seller (http://www.promedion.nl) and they didn't even know that the option existed nor that there is and BIOS-update to add Max. Fan & Touchpad/AudioDJ off.

I am still waiting for answers on this. The hope they will release a BIOS with OC option and Max Fan option.

My details are:

Motherboard
ID: DMI
Name: Clevo M570a
Version: D03
Locked Bios
Version: SONOMA01.86C.0052.D.0509141617

Videocard (not locked)
Type: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X800 XT (0x5D48)
Bios: BK-ATI VER008.017M.193.012

I think all who DO NOT have the option should reply accordingly in this thread.

I thought it more valid to try and identify why one might or might not have this option then to simply ask who has it and who does not, the pole was calculated to predict a trend that may prove indicative. I do however agree it would be a valid addition to the pole.

ALL WHO DO NOT HAVE THIS OPTION IN THE BIOS, PLEASE REPLY ACCORDINGLY...

Thats because none of the voting options actually apply for me, so there's no way I can cast my vote!

So just doing what you told me to

Gents, more pole voting please, lets try and identify trend for those who do have the option...

Maybe I will burn my BIOS and post it for those who don't have it...

PS, MY GPU IS ALSO LOCKED (IT'S A 5720/XPS THANG)

everything locked, kinda sucky.

I bet someone with some experience in editing the Bios would find the frequency feature "remmed" out and make a simple change to put it back in. Does anyone know a good program to examine the moboard bios? I dont know if I would risk changing it but I sure would like to take a look at the firmware.

EDIT
I used Bios Information Tool from
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-14973.html

and got this :
þ DMI.BaseBoardInformation:
Manufacturer: Midern
Product: M570A
Version: D03
Serial Number: Not Applicable

þ DMI.SystemInformation:
Manufacturer: Midern
Product Name: M570A
Version: Not Applicable
Serial Number: Not Applicable

þ DMI.BIOSInformation:
Vendor Name: Phoenix Technologies LTD
BIOS Version: SONOMA01.86C.0052.D.0510042137
BIOS Starting Address Segment: E5C3h
BIOS Release Date: 10/04/05
BIOS ROM Size: 512 KB
[û] PTLTD ACPI 0.9/1.x
[û] System Management BIOS w/DMI v2.31
[û] PCI IRQ Routing Table v1.0 (correct)

If one of the peeps who have the overclockability cpuld do this as well we could compare. I think the baseboard version and bios release dates are the most relevant info here.

Need to Add an option for those that do not have the option plus have us post comments. I for one would appreciate you posting your BIOS.
doc: is my english so bad or do you talk about the processor while veryone else is talking about the graphics subsystem? ?_?
codename says that his gpu (graphics processing unit) has a locked bios and you ask for a mobo bios... hmmm

We are trying to identify trend which is more important in the long run...

If no one votes then we are back to square one.

I am not going to publish my BIOS until I have a good understanding as to why the option is there for some and not for others, that's the point. So in other words, it could harm a given system unless we understand why.

I think I will contact Sager myself and do a little research on this and maybe this will shed some light on it all...

GUYS, LETS KEEP THIS THREAD ON TRACK AND NOT TALK ABOUT LOCKED/UNLOCKED GPU's HERE (I KNOW I DID IT TOO). THE FOCUS OF THIS THREAD IS IF YOU HAVE THE "FSB OC" OPTION IN YOUR 5720 BIOS OR NOT. AGAIN, PLEASE VOTE IF APPLICABLE, THANKS ALL.
Hey Guys,

I think I have some very good news! I haven't tried it yet as I'm not at home but;

Has anyone tried the BIOS from Rock Xtreme CT (http://www.rockdirect.com/)???

It's another Clevo m570 clone and they offer a BIOS update on their support site (http://www.mobile-support.net) BUT they also include the original BIOS (I think & hope with the OC option).

See this direct link to the BIOS.
http://www.mobile-support.net/produc...ture_qa_id=512

They also have a support topic for the m570a in which they advise NOT to use the OC option in the BIOS.
And how can I burn this .iso file to a CD (stangely the file only contains 2 .BIN files)
You need to burn it with a program that can create a bootable CD, like Roxio Easy CD Creator, the newest version of Nero also supports bootable CDs, then i'll ask you to load up a .iso, then select the file you downloaded the "CD Image, open with Roxio" and burn.
But then the CD will only contain the two .BIN files? (isn't there a BIOS flash program required?)
It's most likely included, what I think they've done is that they've but all the files on the floppy, rom and flasher, then they've simply made an image file, you would only see the two bin files that makes up the .img and not everything inside them.

Also I would suspect that they've made an autoexec file so that the BIOS flashes itself, I'll give this BIOS a shot a bit later.
