New Inspiron 9300 model is on US website!! - Page 3

That is pretty amazing that the new i9400 with a 7800 in a stock configuration will likley stomp on a stock XPS GEN 2 with 6800 Ultra in graphics performance. It was not that long ago that the 6800 Ultra was the most bad ass notebook GPU on the planet. It boggles the mind how quickly technology marches on.

I wonder what it would cost me to pick up a new motherboard and that processor, I mean if I can get both for under 1200, I might be intrested, and just swap over my parts into that, plus I'm sure I could sell my old Intel 780 for a good price.

That is a fair amount of work and risk (who knows what kind of incompatibilities that might flush out). I also suspect it would null and void any warranties since you would be mixing and matching two different models. I would be more inclined to eBay the old i9300 and picking up a new i9400 hopefully with a good coupon deal.

there is a thread in the 9300/xps dell section. i think it does not void your laptop war. but the gpu's war. is only 90 days, or something like that

I would think our 7800GTX's wouldn't work in the 9400 as well because the BIOs hack was for a single core/different chipset.

Maybe once there is a XPS dual core BIOS hack, but what if there never is one?

Here is how I think it works (if anyone knows to the contrary feel free to correct me). If you are putting a GPU in a model that officially supports it - then it would either assume the warranty of the base system or it would have the standard 90 day warranty (which ever is greater). Now if you are putting it in a model that does not officially supoort it i.e. a 7800 GTX in a i9300, at best it would fall into the 90 day category. Either way the warranty on your base system is still in effect. However if you mess up the notebook by improperly installing the card DELL could refuse to honor the warranty. Or if the 7800 GTX somehow caused the 9300 to fail - they could refuse to honor the warranty since you are using an unsupported configuration. However it would be tought for DELL to actually prove this.

There is no need for a BIOS hack to use the 7800GTX in the 9300. That was for the 6800 Ultra only.

i'd just wait for the meron, since the yonah's product life cycle is too short, with the meron coming out later this year..... I would'nt try a mobo transplant either.... too risky and the upside is just too low.... I'll probably upgrade or retire my 9300 once they come up with a gpu that can own a ps3.... hopefully when meron comes out

really? i didnt know that. so you just install the 7800gtx, get the 9 cell and the xps power brick and it will boot right up? wow, thats one of the things that was holding me back
post #50 of 138
That was my understanding of it. Only the 6800Ultra required the BIOS hack. The 7800GTX does not need this done!

I beg to differ. True, a 9300 will run with a 7800GTX, but it will only run in low-power mode until you use an XPS2 bios.
I think you need to have the BIOS hack.

I remember the posts that showed low power mode performance going around with 9300 BIOS (though the 7800GTX was recognized).

Ahh yes that IS correct. I forgot that while the hack doesn't need to be done for the 7800gtx to run it'll only run in its low-power mode. My mistake!

So how do you think the 6800ultra and 7800(vanilla) will compare as to performance?
You dont need a "hack" per se, you just need to flash the XPS2 BIOS on your 9300 so that it gives full power to the card, no big deal. Also, I think it would be sweet to get a new mobo and CPU in this laptop, but I dunno if they coded the 7800GTX to be accepted by this new board. I would wait for at least one new BIOS revision to come out before attempting this.

If you check Nvidia's website the 7800 (vanilla) definitely comes out on top of the 6800 Ultra. Although I guess it will also depend on how DELL clocks the GPU/memory.

Until they fix a few problems with the Inspiron 9300 Model, this will not justify a upgrade IMO.

For starts:

no keypad
small touchpad
buggy mic/headphone jacks
only SD card reader (new looks good, 5 in 1)
wireless card cant pick up signals well
memory timings cant be adjusted
problems with the screen (WC222 is nice tho)
layout is nice, but could be better
color scheme
bluetooth can be buggy
ect ect

*edit* for a "multimedia" laptop, no intergrated TV tuner

I would have to give the current Inspiron 9300 and 4 out of 5 now, if they would look at the above problems, then I would easily give it a 5 out of 5

all in all im very pleased with the Inspiron 9300, the dual core and 7800 go doesn't justify the price

now when the big dogs come to play, and 64bit/dual core cpu's show up, along with dual core support, ill be a very happy person, and my XPS2 converted I9300 may show up on eBay

Well, if this uses the same chasis as the 9300...it might b einteresting. This would mean that the video card must be in the same position, and the cooling form factor would be the same. With this in mind, I see no reason one could not just do a motherboard swap. We need someone to find the refurb part number for the motherboard!

Nvidia classifies the 7800 as faster than the 6800Ultra. The 6800 is faster than the 7600 and lower cards.

To make one of these new rig just like mine it would be $2,832.... If they offer any good discounts ($850) then the price would be very fair.
