I want a laptop that can sit on my lap without frying my testicles and runs on the battery for at least 90 minutes so I can make use of the portability aspect.
i have 0 problem with my 9300 w/ gtx heating. and the battery life is great, about 2 and a half hours or so, depending on the lcd brightness.

Anyway, this whole thing is great news IMO. about a year from now, we can look at some merom benchmarks and see if it is truly worth an upgrade. since we know that merom compatible mobos work with hte 9300 chassis(the 9400), if merom is worth upgrading to, it will just take a call to spare parts to get a new mobo.

On top of that, it means that the possibility of a future video card upgrade is more likely.

NOT. You know that whole new logo, core, duo core...yadada. Not to mention the technical improvments, faster memory bus, dual .65nm cores, more tweaks all around.

PM is dead.

too bad the new name sucks...

For all those SD card haters, another new improvement is the fact that it has a 5 in 1 reader instead of the SD slot.

I still plan on buying a 9300 when the price is right again. I don't get why they still have their prices so effin high even though they've already announced the E 1705 (9400).

actually, that sucks cause it might mean that hte 9400 mobo wont fit in the 9300. oh well.

I was mislead, becase according to infoworld.com, "Yonah is the code-name for the dual-core version of Intel's Pentium M processor for laptops and small desktops. ". I see a keyword of "version of ... PM", which lead me to believe it was still considered a PM. Reading on other sites I see Intel is doing away with the "Pentium" name all together...

Thanks for jumping down my f'ing throat guys, 1 slip up and everyone will beat the shit outta ya.

Yeah, good point. But I didn't actually believe that they would make the mobo compatible with the earlier computer. They are smart enough to know that that wouldn't be a very good business decision. I guess they put enough changes in it to make the mobo upgade not possible, but not enough to have to spend the extra time and money to completely rebuild the chassis.

You're right. It can be considered a next-gen Pentium M simply because it was based off the PM core- a faster bus, smaller die size, and dual-core can be considered direct evolution of current tech.

It's all marketing anyhow. It wouldn't make much difference if intel called it "Pentium MD" or whatever. There isn't going to be much difference until Merom/Conroe.

I don't care... I'm just happy because with Merom/Conroe will come the death of the Pentium4. The sooner the better.

go7800 = 16 pixel pipes
go7800gtx = 24 pixel pipes

Also, Dell Small Biz lists Inspiron 9400. Dell Home lists E1705. If you've noticed Dell started with the Dimension line-up first and started branching the naming system off into B=Basic, E=Entertainment, and XPS... while Small Biz keeps the old naming system. Then they did the same with the Inspiron lineup. They released the newer B model laptops, now the E model laptops will begin coming out, then the new 20" XPS will come out.

The only thing left to figure out now is... since the 9300 was making lil steps with the SATA config... is the inside layout of the 9400 the same? And is the new XPS going to have the same layout with just a larger chassis?

New options to discover here. And considering how fast Dell Spare Parts in the US is ready for the occasion... anyone that didn't already get a 7800gtx for 250$ can probably call up today and get a 7800go for 200$ and it'll run on the 6cell and 90watt brick. But a 9400 BIOS hack will probably be in order for the mobo to recognize it. =)

My check for this week is $2200+... if they have these things shipping on my bday and I have even more money to play with I'll order up one of these 9400's and dissect it to see what we can learn if no one has already beaten me to it.... just for you! =)

Consider the compact size of card readers... I doubt it's a different design. I'm even willing to bet that the 7800go is the same size and heatpipe design as the 6800go because the chassis dictates orientation of parts... and we already know the chassis layout. =)

Did XPSgen2 owners need a hacked bios to run the 7800GTX upgrade?? If not, why couldn't I9300 owners just do the same easy swap of GPU?
I personally wouldnt want a 20" xps. and if it has a resolution higher than wuxga, while cool, it would bring even the 7800gtx go to its knees when gaming. not to mention that it would be about 1.5" wider and deeper than hte 9300 nad probably will weigh over 10 pounds.

thats what I was thinking

the 9300 gives less power to the video card cause the 6800go is the fastest thing that is supposed to run in the 9300, and it uses quite a bit less power than the 7800gtx.

the go7800(vanilla) can run on a 6-cell battery, doesn't that lead you to assume that the power between that and the go6800 are about the same??

Just in case, in that last post I was talking about swaping the go6800 with go7800(vanilla), when it would become available in Dell spar parts (just like what happened with XPSgen2 owners and the 7800GTX)
Since it's running on 6cell battery it leads me to assume that the 7800 is probably a 6800 go with a little more kick. I doubt it will out-muscle a 6800 ultra.

Look at the specs on the Nvidia website, it does but not drastically.

That's technology growing for you :P

Likelihood:

Vanilla 7800 Go: 6Cell battery/90W powerbrick ---> underclocked Core/memory due to less power ---> 6800 Go heat sink assembly due to less heat ---> reduced performance ----> 3Dmark05 score already reviewed by PCMAG 3800 Stock --> not much more performance stock than the 6800 Go in the 9300 --> so you have a chip that can outperform a 6800 Ultra Go but cannot as dell has not configured it correctly to achieve this ---> why? dell wants to sell XPS M170 Laptops for gaming and not E1705 laptops

I rest my case!

I feel damn upset.

I think I'm gonna be sick...

*throws up*

That would be very disappointing...
