New CableCard-Ready HDTV Tuner coming

Everyone,

ATI is showing at this year's CES the first of its kind (I think): an HDTV/standard TV tuner box that hooks to your computer, and can tune premium HD sources like HBO HD!

I can't wait...

Oh, and I think the demonstration unit is being hooked up to a Dell XPS2.

So with this box we can do the TiVo thing on our laptops, with HD, HD over the air, regular cable, and regular the air--in short, everything?

I see that the article mentions using Windows MCE along with it.

I took a look at it--apparently it won't do the one thing I really really want--play/record HDTV from encrypted Cable TV channels ...e.g. HBO HD, Showtime HD, Starz HD...
Simply because you need a cablecard to decrypt the datastream coming down the cable from the headend.

GEE, I WONDER IF IT'LL WORK WITH OUR LAPTOPS!?!?!?

AFAIK, That ATI shown in the Anandtech link above is the only one that's ever been seen (real hardware, not some press release) that can do this.

Yeah, and the fact that is IS real ATI hardware and not vaporware is astonishing.

Ok... so finally ATI has a product ready for assembly and finaled BEFORE their release date. Now they just have 11 months to make sure they can meet demand for once. But considering they're already planning to immediately limit it to OEM's first and then to consumer resellers doesn't speak well for the product.

Honestly I'll want one of them ASAP if no one else comes out with a competing product. I don't care much for ATI hardware in the multimedia ring or graphics ring. But since this product will be the first that will be a "native module" to a better software/OS product it stands to perform better than past ATI crap.

If Dell offers this box right away with their first Vista Dimension machines I'll be picking one up the first time some good codes come around (30% off 999$ or better).

p.s. Thank you for this article... altho it's out of place it's something I'm very glad to hear about.

"Out of place"? Ha! They were demo'ing the box with an XPS2!
EDIT: Forgot the smileys...
