Upgrading memory expansion peeves

Why are laptops suppled with very little memory expansion? For example 512MB is probably base minimum at the moment, but later on you'll want to upgrade, here's Acer 1642..

RAM
Installed RAM512 MB
Maximum RAM2048 MB
RAM Slots Free0
RAM Slots2

So you'll have to rip out 512MB and buy 1GB module. It's the same for 1694, great spec but same (chuck out memory) 1GB is plenty, but not if you plan to do large Photoshop/video editting work.

Installed RAM1024 MB
Maximum RAM2048 MB
RAM Slots Free0
RAM Slots2

So why can't they just fit a single module instead? Or supplied without any memory (for a discount) so you can fit a single module that'll cover you over for a few years upgradability, plus have a choice to fit another later on if that's not enough.

You can't put it any more plain than that. It really is all about money, if 1GB sodimms were cheaper than 2X512mb (or 2x256mb)that usually come standard then that is what you'd be getting instead.. Sad to say.. but that is the plain truth

check your ram slot before ordering!

i bought a 1Gb stick of cheapy pc2700 (333mhz)ram for my Ferrari 3200 (plus a 100gb 7200 rpm hard drive, yum, yum, plays quake 4 with no lag, medium setting, 600x800) when i opened the case to take the 256mb stick out, i discovered that it wasn't there!!!
Turned out Acer has generously installed 1x512mb stick under the keyboard. Had I looked in the first place,I would have known this. I would have got a 1Gb stick of pc3200 (400mhz)instead, for the same price, as my 512mb stick and my 1Gb stick don't work together. Damn!
At least I suppose I have a sellable 512mb stick of Ferrari 3200 ram. Who wants it?

Acer always states in their spec's that they have 2 smaller sticks of ram, but it seems common that when you open them up they actualy have 1 larger stick of memory, nothing wrong with that IMHO.

sure there is! the spec calls for dual channel support, only available with 2 equal sodimms installed.... it boosts performance a lot
