It is going to offer 5400 rpm drives too. I don't get what the big deal is.

To me, the big deal is that they're offering cutting edge technology with the display and carbon fiber and a dual core processor, and then they put in a 4200RPM drive which is far from cutting edge. Why even offer a drive that slow when 5400 has been pretty standard for a couple of years now?

If the SZ with carbon fibre case has DVI out and express card then I'm sold!!

4200RPM slows the shit out of a machine... Even 5400rpm is KINDA slow.. Like the other dude said..All this cutting edge stuff, then they put a slow ass hdd in there.. someone needs to work on a enegry efficent, small 7200rpm hdd.

Yes 4200rpm is pretty slow but with enough RAM it's not the end of the world. Certainly with the SZ they've gone for getting as much juice out of the battery as possible, spinning a disk at 7200rpm isn't going to help.

It's a swings and roundabouts problem. I had a Sony TR with a 4200rpm 1.8 inch HDD and it was fine in my opinion. I always used hibernate so rarely fully booted Windows and with 1GB of RAM in it, was extremely quick. I'm not saying it wouldn't have been quicker with a faster HDD but I got about 4 hours battery life out of it which was really useful.

I think the SZ series sounds great. I'm glad Sony have put the webcam back in and also the mic as some of their more recent models have missed out on that too. The LED LCD for the Premium's is also great, I read a review of the T series with the LED LCD and it did indeed get over 7 hours of battery life, truely amazing.

Higher speed drives do not consume any noticable amount of power.

That's pretty much the nature of the business. It sucks, but unless you want to buy a new laptop every 6 months or so, eventually you're going to have to live with an inferior (but still good probably) lappy.

I am in this same situation. Just bought a Sony S580P less than a month ago. Luckily I have time to wait till the 17th of Jan. And send back my s580. Once I get the refund i'll order an Sz Premium. The only thing I will miss on my S is the design.

Does anyone know if the SZ will replace the s-series?

I was pretty damn close to buying a S-580P but am delighted to wait another week to see what will happen. A couple of points:

1-Theres going to be a huge demand for this, right? Anyone else seeing big delays in them being delivered?

2-Do people reckon we can still order cheap RAM and faster hard drives from NewEgg and install them on the SZ?

3-I'm in NZ and the price markup from the Sony Style shop here is absurd! The S560 with 60GB HD and 512mb ram was NZ$3300! Thats US$2300 over the $1650 you guys will pay! I'm gonna get a friend to buy in the states (Someone really uninterested in computers) and post it to me and pay the duty. I realise this may be off-topic but if you want to point me in the right direction. If I buy in Singapore I even get warranty too.

4-Some sign of new Apple stuff coming out today. That might finally give us a decent comparison in this end of the market, right? Am I inviting flames?

Thats it. I'm new to the forum but thanks for the info so far. I would've bought some hideous lump from Toshiba if I hadn't found you guys.

Cheers

How soon does sony drop the price of their older generation notebooks when a a newer generation comes out? In this case the SZ for the S series. I was going to purchase an S560 until I heard the news of the SZ.

With the SZ, it is safe to assume that there will be no S6XX ... ?

I an a very happy owner of an S260 and will be ready to upgrade this year ... does anyone know if I can use the port replicator and RAM from my S260 on an SZ?

1. Probably not. The only hold-up would probably be from Intel releasing its new Centrino Duo chip; but Intel has traditionally been very good on providing supplies of new product lines.

2. Yes. Hardware is hardware. Sony will not be reinventing the wheel (but they will try to re-brand the wheel, mark it up, and make it seem that only Sony sells these new-and-improved wheels).

3

4. Apple's greatest breakthrough this year will be that their hardware will run on Intel hardware. While we will not be able to run OS X on other hardware, Apple says they will not restrict other OS'es from running on their laptops running Intel hardware. The real question is whether compatability and performance will make this viable. If so, then you could have the OS you like to use running on Apple hardware.

Sony has already offered a mail-in rebate for the S-series (and many others) for a few months now.

Uh, I don't think Apple has ever said they will not restrict other OS's from running on Apple hardware. If what you said is true, can you provide a source to backup your claim.

Do any of you know whether or not this model has a PCMCIA card slot? 1 like previous S models? 2? I couldn't find this info online.

Any word on a release date for the UK?
