New Vaio SZ and FE series - Page 4

I'm curious as to whether this is actually a hardware limitation or a firmware/software limitation (in the 128 mb vs 256 mb turbocache). Isn't it possible that a simple update will increase the limit?

Second (and unrelated) I just ordered my SZ standard with the minimum amount of ram due to Sony's extreme pricing and I am planning to upgrade via NewEgg or the like, and I was wondering if i should wait a few weeks until DDR2 667 mhz ram is out instead of getting the DDR2 533 mhz, since the FSB on the new Core Duos is 667, would their be a fairly significant performance advantage? THanks!

I thought someone said that upgrading the RAM in a Sony would void the warranty?

I would wait for the 667mhz RAM if it was me.
Yes, officially they have said that it may "void" the warrenty but that as long as you keep the original sticks of RAM and reinstall them before you send it back for work, they don't say anything because they aren't looking for excuses to not fix your computer (this is what people have told me, not from personal experience). They do want to keep your business, and being extremely picky about things like replacing RAM, as long as it isn't obvious that there was stupid tampering, would lose them business FAST.

Starting to pop up online...

Notebooks now showing up at PCconnection.com with no tax (in CA) Free Shipping, and 2-10 day delivery time... although thats estimated. I hope Amazon carries the SZ150 as the only main difference between the preconfigured models is the Memory and Hard Drive & WAN card. I dont need the WAN since my Treo 700w can be used as a high speed EVDO modem. I'm using less than half the 80GB on my current S460, and the memory I want to upgrade on my own to the new 667mhz when available.

So the SZ150 doesn't come with the 2 different graphics like the SZ160 and SZ170? It doesn't show the intel integrated on the sz150 but it does show it on sz160 and sz170

sz150 - 180 all have Hybrid Graphics according to here:

all this means is its going to grab more shared memory.not more memory on the card itself.

What type of ram will the SZ use?
1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
Would that ram work in the laptop?

Yes, it will work on SZ.

And about how much memory actually on board, IF 7400go is going to do the TC in the same way as 6200 does, then the "128MB" version SZ would probably have 32MB actually on board and the "PREMIUM 256MB version" would have 64MB.

So would a 128MB card that was dedicated perform about the same or better than the Sony that only has 32MB and uses he Turbo Cache?
A card with full dedicated memory should always be faster than the TC one. Just check that THG link, you will see some comparisons between a non TC 128MB 6200 vs 16MB/32MB/64MB TC 6200s.

Sony of america claims that SZ stands for "Sexy Zebra" which is a great way of describing the beauty and appeal of this new and impoved product line from Sony...

Would the 667Mhz PC2-5300 ram work with the SZ? If it can, wouldn't the graphic processing be faster than the 533mhz ram?

What happened to the SZ-180 (the top of the line SZ)? I haven't been able to find any of last months info on the 180 from Sony's website. Anyone know what the plan is for the SZ model line? They had 7 planned but only 2 are listed on SonyStyle for pre-order.

Please point me in the right direction if anyone knows where I can find the old SZ-180 spec PDF.

PC Connection has dropped thier page for the SZ-180, as has Sony.

PC Mall seems to be the best page for specs (but it's not available):

Ok i called again today to confirm that my FE would ship this week... and he said around the end of this week but said they would not confirm this with an e-mail when i asked.... I then asked to transferred to a technical person so i could ask about the RAM... I asked how much dedicated V-RAM it has... and he said he thinks 64mb than put me on hold saying he would check to make sure... He came back and said that the FE with the nVidia gpu has 128MB of dedicated V-RAM....

This is a question to all people considering buying the SZ.

Do you think it might be worth saving a lot of money and going for the Asus W3J?

What's your reasons for going with the Sony? I'm considering between the Asus W3J and the Sony SZ.

I'm no expert but I was looking at both models myself. With the Asus you are going to get an x1600 graphics card which I've seen get 3d Marks around 4500. It weighs 5 lbs and has a 14" screen and will come standard with 1.66 ghz processor.

The SZ comes with an Nvidia go 7400 w/ 3d marks around 2000, weighs 3.7 lbs and has a smaller screen but its is a little more portable.

Batterly life should be better with the Sony since it can swtich between graphics cards.

Depends on what you are looking for, personally I want to game quite a bit so I am going to wait the very long wait to late March...
I choose SZ over W3J because of battery life and the camera. I don't game much now on pc...more a console person, so I think 7400 is good enough. It should be able to run the only pcgame I play(GuildWar) @native resolution with med/high detail no AA/AF with no problem.
