If you download atimcatw.exe (the bootstrapper/vendor detector) and let it run and fail, it leaves unpacked files in C:\ATI.
If you are a developer, you can take a pick into ATIMCDnld.msi - the http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/index.html URL is all over there. In fact I have a simple JavaScript file that I can run and replace a Uniwill record with Acer (vendor ID = 1025) there but that is just for fun since having URL is enough.

Hi DarthAcer,

Thanks for the reply. So using your script you managed to pass the validation? Yeah, I do understand that there may be a lot of ways to get drivers work. Actually, what I am interested in is just the way people discovered the link (just out of curiosity )

I got the link from someone who owned a Uniwill or some such other notebook that is on ATI’s "allowed notebooks" list.

Let me explain it as simply as I can:

The only way to get the driver is to go to that link. The only 3 ways to get to that link are to either have someone give it to you, have a notebook that passes the verification test (retarded, imo), or trick the test into letting you pass it (ie: the previously mentioned code change).

The driver works on any notebook that has the right video card. Your 8104 or whatever Acer you have will work with this driver just fine (do I need to say it again?). BUT, you need to be sure to uninstall your previous ATI drivers first, then reboot into safe mode and run Driver Cleaner to get rid of any remnants of the old driver. Then install the newest driver on ATI's site (6.1 should be coming out any time now). If you have problems doing this process, feel free to ask us.

If you do the above process and then don’t like the results, feel free to try the Omega drivers on www.driverheaven.com. They work just fine most of the time (though can be a little unstable sometimes in certain games, from the reports I’ve read).

Good luck,

I got it working with www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst link however CCC is not working. Is there a way to get CCC working? Does it matter if its working or not?
CCC SHOULD be working, if you installed the drivers correctly. Did you fully uninstall the previous drivers and run driver cleaner before attempting to install this driver?

I did uninstall previous drivers but I didn't run driver cleaner. Where can I get driver cleaner?

so i followed your folks directions and updated my mobile catalyst drivers successfully (though cli.exe crashes), and i am still having a problem in CS:S: every time i get into it with something with multiple grenades or shoot at people when there is water around or some other sort of situation like that i get jitters or sort of a .5 second loop over and over. it clears when the next round starts, or sometimes after a few seconds, but needless to say it sucks majorly. any ideas? i tried turning down the sounds quality and device settings. my rig is a pretty standard 8104, just updated the drivers and the proset wireless stuff. also turned off the ePower crap.

Thanks! Let's see how well the 6.1 drivers do.

still having problems with CS:S jamming repeatedly, though sometimes it ends up sorting itself out but most of the time it will jam until it blues screens. i've tried it on low res, same problem. basically, the video stops and the sound repeats the last 1/2 second over and over again. it is driving me crazy any ideas?

Which version of .Net is the best with 6.1 drivers? 1.1 or 2.0

I've found the mobile drivers with CCC to the pits. CCC slows down my entire system. I have installed the mobile CCC version, uninstalled the CCC package and manually installed the control panel applet from the desktop driver set.

To be honest, any of the modded ATI drivers seem to be slightly unstable, cause erratic behavior, and just "feel" slower than the drivers that shipped with my acer. After using everything from Unian Catalyst, driverheavens mods, to ati's mobile drivers, I ended up going back the ancient version that shipped with my 8104.

Original drivers: 32-45 fps in WoW Orgimmar
5.1 Catalyst (Patje mod): 16-37fps WoW Orgrimmar
UNian 5.13: 22-40fps WoW Orgrimmar
6.1 Catalyst: 18-37fps WoW Orgrimmar

Totally unscientific, but wow runs faster for me using the original drivers. Right now WoW is all I play that stressed the system at all.

katorga: Your observation is really interesting! I was seriously thinking to go back to the stock drivers as well.

Far Cry, Counter-Strike freezes all the time and Neverwinter Nights run significantly slower since I'm using the ATI catalyst mobility drivers (or Omega)...

I've bought this notebook to be able to play games every once in awhile but if I cannot that there was no point to pay so much money for it.

My only concern with the stock drivers is that I won't have powerplay if I change back. Based on my experience powerplay helped a lot in battery life.

Any suggestions?

I personally suggest using the newest released mobility drivers from ATI (most everyone on this forum with an ATI card knows where to get those now). I also suggest installing the CCC. If you don't want it running all the time and using up valuable system resources, simply use a program such as "Startup Control Panel" to keep it from booting with windows. Then you can run it whenever you need it, but you don't have it slowing down your notebook when you don't need it.

I've never had stability issues when just using the official ATI drivers, but I've been one of those who've had issues with the Omegas (some people do, some people don't... I think a lot of that depends on what games you play). I know I've had some little quirky things that happened with certain versions of drivers, but they were never during actual game play (maybe while loading an Unreal Tournament map I would see a white line that wasn't normally there), and ATI always fixed the issue in the next driver release.

Good luck!

If it exited cleanly after running "on demand" I would not have problems with CCC. But after using it, it leaves one or two CLI.EXE processes running which should be killed manually. Major annoyance.

What I do not understand is why ATI is unable to do a simple thing: create the resident (running as background process) part in regular C and user interface in .NET. I do programming in .NET myself but all Windows services I create are native (no .NET there).

Just for those who are interested I solved my constant game crash problems.

The problem was with undervolting. I only undervolted to 1.180v but it made my system unstable. The weirdest thing is that sometimes only the game crashed not my computer.

1st lesson learnt: I've always thought that if I undervolted too much my whole computer would restart... but it turned out to be not true. Sometimes only the game's exe file crashes.

2nd lesson learnt: If I exit NHC (right click on temp icon in the bottom right corner) without a restart, my CPU will stay undervolted!!! I have to uncheck the voltage in NHC before I quit the actual program.

I hope I could help somebody out there!
