XPS Concept Laptop - Page 2

Thread Starter
I thought I should update with some better pictures:

Guess they already have at least one of these things built

Quick, where does that reviewer live?!?!

Looking at the pictures above reminds me:

Way back when (in college) I ended up working on a Compaq Portable II (ha! portable!).

It had a super-powerful, get this, 8088 @ 4.77 MHz, I think. (yes, I had no money, no computer, and had to borrow this monstrosity to do some project or other)

Seems what goes around comes around...

I like it.

If more things are upgradable then I really, really, really like it.

Looks like a Lan Party Verison of the XPS desktop.

How nice would that be to take to a lan party
Open up and start gaming.

I'll take 2 please
I would buy it. It's easier to bring to a LAN than a full system, and it looks like it has the opportunity to have more of a punch than a laptop.

I'd grab one in a second.

This is the general future of notebooks. This is not the first desktop replacement/laptop with this design I have seen. (Sony had one similar). The lack of a battery is its killing point. If they had one of these out now that had a battery came in a 17inch screen version and had the 7800go, I would get it today.

I would purchase it with the full intention of not using it as a laptop, but as a full desktop replacement. I absolutley hate breaking down my system to bring it to a LAN, and the portability of that system is it's number one selling point. Desktop power, laptop portability.

It's kinda like the Nintendo Revolution's controller... sleep on it, then decide whether or not you like the design of it.
Yeah, this is totally not a laptop at all.

I think that it'd make a pretty sweet HTPC though. That or as others have said, an AWESOME LAN system. I'd totally buy one if I wasn't as happy with my 9300 as I am.

All in all, I really hope they decide to actually produce these things because I see them selling pretty big with LAN gamers.
its pretty sweet, but i dont see teh advantage over the 9300. i guess the only two things is that hte lcd will be higher quality and it will have nicer speakers. other than that though, this thing is a BRICK. And unless they put SLI 7800gtxs in there, the performance wont be better than a 9300 either.
I don't travel with my 9300 much, but I think this takes travelling out of the question. You can take it down the street or across town for a LAN party, but that's the extent of mobility. With that said, if it's not an arseload of cash, and performs better than a 9300, I'd definitely be interested, as I mostly use my 9300 for gaming anyway, and don't travel with it much. The addition of a full size keyboard and (seemingly) high quality speakers is a definite plus. I don't really understand how they can have an 8.1 surround sound system in front of you though; unless the 8 speakers are just there, and not meant for surround sound.

That picture looks like the Tandy portable. It cost like 4000$ back in 1982.

Saw a magazine ad for it a long time ago with some guy in his backyard with one of them on his patio table.... thought that was pointless.

It's a new take on the old luggable form-factor. Reminds me of my old Kaypro Days. http://oldcomputers.net/kayproii.html

you guys are right, no battery equals no-laptop. my question is how do you guys know that there isnt a batery or what type of anything is going to be in it, i havent read anything about the hardware in this model yet. all i know is 8 speaker and a sub, 20.1 lcd and a slot loader.

Edit: i just found an article here: http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/06/h...le-concept-pc/

it looks to me like a battery on the bottom of that bad boy. as soon as these go on the market i am definately getting one..
battery? this thing needs its own nuclear powerplant
post #38 of 45
I can use that to type up notes in class
Lol, it's bigger than my desk...and I don't have outlets by most of my desks in my classes.

Where are you guys getting the "no battery" from? Anandtech says Dell promised them 3 hours of battery life with this bad boy.
