The production model got reviewed here:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/articl...d=36&page=5319

Looks like quite a bit of optimization got done as the one I tested got a 3dMark05 of only about 4000 and they got 4385 out of the production model.
Well 4000 still is a pretty descent score for a mid range. I think 6800U scores like 5000 on a 2.13ghz XPS2.

if this thing just had a better screen, i'd be all over it.
Better screen? Have you seen it in person already? Looks like a solid offering. The site liked it enough. :P I'm personally not a big fan of how it looks upon opening it up though. The externel shell looks nice enough.

For gaming, probably not a big deal (Yonah). For those who do mobile dev and stuff, multitasking will finally be possible on something short of a brick.

The most interesting thing in this laptop is sound. If it is the same as in TM8104 (ie disgusting sound) then Acer guys didn't fix the major problem of TM8100 line

PC Mag named it "Editor's Choice". Wow!

I have no problem at all with sound on the 8104. either thru the built-in speaker (although it's a bit weak) or the headphone port

Hello Wiz33,

Are you sure you like the sound coming out of the built-in speakers? No offence ment but have you heard sound coming out of some really good sound system (at least 2.1 or higher)? Again, I don't mean anything offensive towards you, it's just possible that you have nothing to compare this sound with. I have found that there is no bass sounds at all while high frequencies are whistling sometimes. I am pretty sure it is not the bug of my laptop, there are lots of other people complaining about that. Well, it is laptop after all - not a professional sound system. But frankly speaking, Toshiba laptops have much better speakers - that's for sure (though they have some other problems and there is no this rich configurations for this moderate price)

Yeah, when I use a laptop to listen to music, I almost always use decent headphones instead.

Well, I have never heard decent bass from a laptop, even one with a so called built-in sub-woofer so I don't count on good sound from built-in speakers anyway. Is there better sounding laptop? Yes, but they are still nothing compared to a good pair of earphones. The speakers on the TM8104 is OK, not great by any means but they are not terrible as far as laptop speakers go.

Hi Wiz33,

Frankly speaking, this is my first laptop but I have heard a lot of sound systems (including cheap ones that cannot produce anything but crap) and I would still think that TM8104 doesn't have decent sound system. I don't want it to be on the level of professional system but it shouldn't be like what I (and you and other users of TM8104) have for sure. Anyway, I have to get used to it but it would be really nice of Acer to realize that they have this weak point and correct it.

When is this machine up for sale? Ahh end of January....Sweet!
This looks like a nice replacement for my Ferrari 4005. Now I wish I did not just buy and extra gig of RAM. eBay, here I come.
wow. guys that can upgrade their laptop every 6 months. =/
post #18 of 46
i think they should take speakers out of laptops and make room for a retractable power cable....and a small powersupply built in.

and a hidden MOUSE!

I like this laptop.

i thought this thing was supposed to get 5-6 hours battery life... the PCMag review shows its battery test result as lasting 3 hours 47 minutes.... is that b/c of the test itself? why the variance?
