I'm looking at ways to get my laptop insured, and my dad recently came across safeware.com. Anyone have some input to help?

Somone posted pretty recently about getting his laptop insured through his home-owners insurance (he said it was like $3 a month) not bad......But no, I've had no experience with them.

Here are some pages on laptop theft. It's not insurance, but it helps:

homeowner's insurance

I have mine insured with my homeowner's policy. It's cheap each month...don't even see the money. And it covers anything and everything. It's just like Dell's complete care...which was the only thing keeping Dell in the running for awhile. Then I realized I already had insurance for my desktop. Now it covers both computers up to a certain amount (which you decide).

If something happens and it's not covered by the manufacturer's warranty...this will take care of it. Kinda nice to know...

Hope this helps...

I'm curious about this. Let's say your manufacturer's warranty runs out, and you have that other one left. Then something happens to the computer. What do you do? Who do you send it to? I mean, what do the insurance people offer in case your computer malfunctions?

Thanks. Cheers.

re: Insurance

Thanks for the web sights, it provided some good information and options. I liked the computer tracking if stolen.

I have not checked our families homeowners policy yet, I would like to compare it to Safeware.com, which looks impressive.

Their web site said:
Unlike most standard homeowners and business policies, Safeware's PC insurance programs protect against losses wherever the equipment is located. A typical PC insurance policy includes the following features:

Comprehensive coverage, including accidental damage, theft, vandalism, water damage and natural disasters.

Complete repair or replacement of your computer system without a deduction for depreciation.

Optional deductibles.

Replacement of preinstalled software.

Coverage for lightning and power surge, regardless of source.

Coverage at home, in school or in transit.

Here's how my homeowner's policy covers my computer...

If I drop it...spill something on it...whatever...and it's not covered by the manufacturer's warranty (or it happens after a year), I simply call USAA (my insurance company) and tell them what happened. What I would then have to do is find out how much it costs to get fixed (I'd probably send it to Sager since it's from them). After that, I would let my insurance company know what the cost is and they would cut me a check. Then I pay for the repair. It's not that bad...I had to do make a claim three and a half years ago because my modem got fried during a thunderstorm. They paid for the new modem. There wasn't a deductible or anything. I simply tell them how much coverage I want (I think I have mine at 3k). I don't know what the monthly premium...but it's only a couple bucks.

Hope that answers some questions...

One more thing...

The homeowner's policy is good for as long as I pay a premium. When I bought my laptop last month...I called to get a policy...but then they reminded me I already had one for 3k (I got my first desktop 4 years ago and I've had the policy since). You don't have to take out a seperate policy for every computer you have...so it works for both computers in my case.

Thanks for the info. Now, about that policy of yours, are you sure that it comes out (the computer coverage) at only an extra 3 bucks a month? That comes out to about $36 a year, which seems highly... impossible. You mentioned it covered all sorts of things, so I'm just wondering. Thanks again.

Cheers.

BE WARNED ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

do NOT abuse your homeowners insurance. My family filed two claims this past year (the first in 18 whole years, first claims EVER, one car break in and the other flood damage caused by a manufacturer defect on our ice maker in our fridge) and we got canceled. Now we are stuck with the insanely high rates courtesy of the state of virginia that only cover 50k in fire, no theft, nothing. So, be warned, post 911 insurance companies dont want to lose anymore money then they have to. So, i could just be paranoid, but if you live in an area of high theft, where your laptop might get stolen, and then something else might happen in the same year, it is not worth putting it on homeowners, especially if its highly probable that it will be stolen.

just my 2 pennies....damn insurance companies, they can all...well..yeah

Aight...I just whipped out my homeowners insurance policy regarding my personal computer coverage.

First off...there is a deductible...$100. I don't remember paying that when I used it a few years back...but there you go.

It does not cover the computer if I lose it. Hopefully that will never happen. It also doesn't cover loss of the computer against regurlar wear and tear, birds, rodents, insects, war (declared or not), nuclear reaction, radiation, or radioactive contamination (I'm reading this straight from the policy...not being sarcastic). However...loss by fire if it results from nuclear reaction, nuclear radiation, or radioactive contamination, is covered (boy do I feel better!!!).

Seriously, though...I remember speaking a few weeks back with a rep and specifically asked if I dropped or spilled something on it...would it still be covered. She said yes...and according to the policy...it isn't excluded...so I'm good to go.

All this costs just 8 bones per term (which is a year). Like I said...that is for 3k or coverage...so it'll go up a little for more coverage. But it's a lot less than I thought.

Mellman99 brought up a good point with making claims. The more you claim...the higher the premium...or they might just drop you. I think they got shafted...seems like they got a raw deal in that case. He also mentioned post 9-11 policies might be a little more stringent. That could be true...but since I have had this since 98...they can't raise it.

It is still worth talking to your insurance company, though. 8 bucks a year for this is better than forking out a couple hundy for less coverage...

I'm also going through homeowners. pretty much everything is covered, but I think it is insurance company-by-insurance company basis. Call an agent and see

Yes, that was me. I talked to my insurance agent and signed up. It ended up being exactly $2.81 a month for $2200 of coverage. NO deductable. It covers accidental damage and theft while away from home which is not convered under most homeowners insurance. I thought it was a pretty good deal.
