If you have inserted a drive with the OS built on another machine I am not surprised it will not work. Windows for a start does not permit such a move (MS validation problems).'
The OS knows the identity of the drive on which it was originaly supplied/built together with the 'local' hardware. Ghost and other drive backup software claim to be able to Clone an OS, drive to drive (not tried it myself). However you you can only Clone from the original OS on your machine to the 'new' drive. With the Ferrari I guess you would need to 'fit' the new drive into a USB enclosure.
