Is adding an extra 0.10GHz for $200 worth it?

Thread Starter
Im thinking of buying a new notebook.

I have a decision to make between these 2 processors:

Option 1 --> Intel® Pentium® M Processor 755 (2 GHz/400MHz FSB)
Option 2 --> Intel® Pentium® M Processor 765 (2.10 GHz/400MHz FSB)

Option 2 costs $200 more. Is it worth it? Why/Why Not?

I haven't got a clue when it comes to Pentium M's.

In short...HELL no.

Not even close. 2 gig is more then enough

I don't know if it is worth it or not. But, when I bought my lappy I had enough money (I worked very hard to get it), so I said: "What the hell! Let's get it!" And I paid the huge difference for my PM 2.13, and I'm happy with it.

i debated the same thing three weeks ago when i bought a dell 9300. i went with the least expensive processor and it runs like a charm. i bet you cannot even tell a difference.

It is not worth the extra $200 for that CPU. Use that money on other upgrades.

$200 of RAM will improve your performance much more than 0.1 of a GHz.

Do the math. At the very best it can only improve the performance by 0.1/2... 5% and it will normally be less.

not worth it. buy more ram or a bigger/faster hard drive

Its worth it for .1ghz msot of the time.... when the price ISNT 200$. If its 40$ more from 1.6->1.7 then yes, i'de say go for it. But 2->2.1 is not worth 200.

I'm not really sure that it is worth it generally... I doubt that anyone will notice it, so why pay for it.

I tend to buy the max of stuff I can't (easily) replace or that will directly affect performance and the min of stuff I can. Thus, I got the 1.73GHz Pentium M in my laptop... it's fast enough for now but if it ever does start to get slow, I will probably be able to upgrade it to 2.26GHz for under $200, which will give me up to 30% better performance.

To be completly honest, it depends how much 40$ (or 200$) means to you. So i guess its all relative.
post #12 of 18
No, unless the faster one has faster FSB (which it doesn't) Go for the slower once. 100mhz is nothing, 5%

well hey, I guess I will go for the 2 GHz option and use that extra $200 to add some useful features/upgrades

Great choice!

the general rule for CPU shopping is to stop when the next higher stepping costs more than $60
post #17 of 18
That rule applies only AFTER you're out of the Sempron/Celeron range.

Spend up to $150 to get to an Athon 64/Sempron/Pentium M.
