M35X-S149 CPU upgrade

Hi all. I am contemplating a cpu upgrade on my laptop. I was wondering if anyone who owsn this laptop has done this? Also, I am looking at a Dothan 740 2MB L2 533 Mhz FSB to replace the Celeron M in my machine. Will this cpu fit and be recognized by the machine? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

You have to realize that upgrading cpu's in a laptop is not as easy or even possible to do like a desktop. Very few laptops are cpu upgradeable. Normally if an upgrade is possible, the motherboard will only accept and upgrade to whatever the largest cpu is available for that specific model

Thanks, I am aware that it isn't the easiest task. So, maybe I should rephrase my question... Is my machine upgradeable, and if so, what cpu can I upgrade to?

What about upgrading to a 5400 or 7200 rpm hard disk? On my spec sheet, it lists ATA-5 interface, will it be compatible with the ATA-6 interface of most hard disks available? Will the hard disk upgrade result in a noticeable improvement in performance?

I already added an extra 256MB of ram. Thinking about removing it and adding a 512MB stick.

You should be able to upgrade the CPU to whatever other CPU was offered in that series (the M35-xxx) so long as the other model uses the same bios as yours does. I'm not sure if that line used the Dothan or the one from right before the Dothan (Banias, I belive), the maind difference being a 400MHz FSB and 1mb cache over 533MHz and 2MB. You'll have to look into that.

Most laptops can be upgraded as far as the CPU. I have upgraded MANY Toshiba laptops, some that came with a 2.0GHz, I went all the way up to 2.8 (Satellite 1905, P4 400FSB), I upgraded M35X-S149 from a Celeron to a Centrino 1.6 2MB. I have upgraded 5105's to P4m 2.4GHz from 1.7, they run awesome at that speed.

Really. any experience with a tecra 8100? I know I can go to a P3 850, but I'm not sure if the upgrade from a 600 t an 850 will be all that noticable. Now, if I could go to a Gig, then I think it would be quite noticable. Any comments?

How did that M35X-S149 you upgraded to a 1.6 2MB work after the upgrade? Was it a noticeable improvement worth the effort? Was that new 1.6 Pentium M chip you installed a 400 mhz FSB or 533 Mhz FSB? I am guessing a 533 FSB...???

Yes, it was 533, I believe all that have 2MB cashe are 533FSB. It worked a lot better. g00nter, I don't ahve much experience dealing with older laptops, 1800/1805, 6000, 9000 are the only P3 models I am familiar with. But I have installed 1200MHz P3 on a 1805 that came with a 700MHz Celeron, works great (socket 370).

Do you have a guide to do the upgrade? Or pics to help the process go smoother?

Here is an ebay auction that has a 400 Mhz FSB 1.7 Ghz Dothan CPU:

That would work eh?

I have a Intel 1.7/2MB SL7EP that I can sell you for $150.00. You have to remove lcd and top case to get to the motherboard. You don't have to remove the motherboard, just the heatsink. I can do it for you for $200.00 including the CPU, shipped.

Thanks. Apart form the speed, I noticed that hte 900 MHz cpu's are cheaper than the 850's (at least on ebay) and the P3 1GHz are about the same price. So I was thinking of giving it a shot with a bigger cpu, but had doubts about if it'd work. Your comments give me hope that it should work.

99% that it will work, laptop motherboard is no different than desktop, unless it has an integrated CPU, which is still replacable. I am sure everyone heard of places upgrading CPUs on the XBOX (integrated). I have seen 1415 Satellite's that came with a Celeron CPU and would not work with a P4m, but I was able to replace a 1.5 Celeron with a 2.4, which made a huge difference.

Added 1Gb Ram chip to M35x-S149 and it was worth it.

I replaced one of the original 2 memory chips in our M35x with a 1GB chips so now we have 1.21 GB ram in the computer and it turned the M35x from almost too slow to use to great. We essentially only use it for surfing the web, editing very large microsoft office files, and simple internet gaming like Runescape. Before adding the memory chip if we had AOL instant messaging running in the background the computer would nearly stop working, now I don't even notice if it is on or off. It was worth the money for the memory chip.

It also helped a lot to turn off many of the programs we didn't need that were starting when I turned on the computer and running in the background.
