Bluetooth interferes with wireless connection

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
I installed the bluetooth chip and drivers in my XPS and if i don't leave the bluetooth turned off, my wireless internet connection will loose it's signal after about 1/2 hour of use. If i just toggle the wireless connection off and on, it will find itself but inevitably loose connection 15 to 30 min later again. Anyone else ever experience this, or have any idea how i might resolve this?

When you say bluetooth chip.. You mean the one from dell.. not a external USB Dongle...

Anyhow. When i got my 9300 i had the same problem and found out it was my bluetooth (internal), rang up dell and they replaced it and now i dont have any more problems...

If your wireless card is a TrueMobile then go to the Device Manager and enable "bluetooth collaboration" in the driver properties for it.

Using my TM1450 as an example:

Device Manager -> Network adapters
right-click on Dell Wireless 1450 Dual Band, select: Properties
click on Advanced tab
highlight Bluetooth Collaboration
change the Value at the right to: Enable.

You may also need to update your wireless internet drivers... I went home for the holidays and I could not stay connected to the wireless internet there... so I downloaded the program that Dell has on their support site, and it worked. Now, windows does not control the wireless, instead a 3rd party program does. As long as it keeps me from dropping my signal, I am fine with having another program in my task bar.

You could also try changing your wireless router to a different channel. I would recommend channels 1 or 11 as they are at the ends of the 2.4 GHz spectrum. Bluetooth hops frequencies several hundred times a second and it keeps a log of what frequencies have poor signal and removes them (for a set amount of time) from the hop list. By changing you wireless router to a channel of the edges of the 2.4 GHz spectrum you free up the middle for you Bluetooth as there won't be as much frequency bleedover and sidebands to deal with. The Bluetooth will have more clean frequencies to hop on and won't end up in your wireless routers frequency band as often resulting in less interference.

Try your wireless router on different channels and see what works best for you. You will also want to get any other devices (phones, microwaves, etc...) that operate in the 2.4 GHz band as far away from you PC and router as possible.

Good Luck,

Martian
