I don't doubt that somebody at Dell is reading these forums, I just doubt that it really comes into play.

Every member of this forum could clamor for purple crushed velvet palmrests on the I9400, but I doubt Dell would really consider it. "A buncha wackos at notebookforums.com want velvet under their wrists," they would say. "Yeah. Whatever. Hello, modding community."

But our offices are contracted with Dell (yeah, yeah, I know. I'm not the CEO, man). Our company is owned by a larger corporation that foots the bill. If corporate told Dell they wanted purple crushed velvet palmrests, Dell would jump at it. And that's because they have a bulk buyer who wants something specific, and is willing to pay the cost.

Again, I'm sure there are more than a few Dell lurkers, listening to our suggestions and taking note. I'm just saying ... don't look for purple crushed velvet palmrests.

Dell is not a mom-and-pop operation anymore. It is not even a computer company anymore. It solely a money making machine obsessed with the bottom line just like any publicly traded corporations. As such, the only opinion that they will listen to is that of Wall St. That is the reality when you join the big league (unfortunately). Meet the quarterly expectations, satisfy the shareholders...that is the game. Us, we are the small fishes in a vast ocean. We don't count that much. That is my two cents worth.

I don't know...a purple crushed velvet palmrest sounds good...ya hear me Dell?!?
Screw that... make the entire chassis out of palmrest gel. But not that dried up bubblegum type. I want it made out of the good stuff that's air permiable for better ventilation.

Then you can get rid of Complete Care because almost any height you drop it from wouldn't break it unless it was intentional and spills would slide right off unless they threw it into the pool.

Interesting...a gel computer.

Would it be the silicone silicon wonder?

short answer: NO

This forum is filled with enthusiasts who have above average intelligence and too much time on their hands. The average person who buys a Dell knows very little about computers..

We represent a very small percentage of Dell users, Mr Dell knows this and also knows that we wont make a major dent in his wallet if we pay out on his products and dont buy them.

Actually Dell was only a computer manufacturer for a short time when he started in his garage.
Dell is really a marketing company selling his branded computer from ODM's

Ok for all you non beleivers if Dell did not monitor theese forums. How come when I posted how to obtain a 7800 Go GTX which is a sticky. The head guy of the XPS Dept.I forget his name called me and asked me how I got the info I posted in the forum and basicly I was a idiot LOL because I forced Dell to release the 7800 Go GTX before they were ready. This is no Bull He also said don't think for one minute Dell does not have regestered forum members in this and all forum But they can't or won't respond to post because I think he said it was against the rules or some crap like that. I kind of tried to get more info out of him about the future XPS Dual core and wanted to know when Dell was going to release It no luck with him he was pretty sharp and I diddnt have enough of a mouthpeice to get anything out of him. Then again he asked where Did I get that info from. My reply was any idiot such as me can read up on intel and nVidia see whats new in the making and put the pieces together and that Dell will be all over it as soon as they release it. He laughed again and told me I can't tell you what to post but he also kind of hinted for me to be cool and don't let too much out. I guess he thought I had some kind of inside source at Dell and wanted their ass for giveing me info LOL. I can be very persistant on the phone that is how I optained my 7800 Go GTX I called Dell soo many times and went through so many people their that diddnt know what I was even talking about with the 7800 Go GTX then finaly a three way conversation from Dell canada led me to a knowledgable parts person in the us. Call it luck yea maybe but being persistant paid off but it took plenty on nerve racking hours to get their. So as I said if you don't beleive you are a fool I know better and just think of all the people who post in here about defrauding Dell LOL.Ya never know you may have a flag next to your name LOL. Im no lawer but have seen some pretty wild things asked and leaked about defrauding Dell and I also now fraud is a crime. Now I think the big question here is will this huge interprize take the time to prosicute ofenders? Let's just say I would watch what you post and leave it at that.

Thanks for the story, but I think you're missing the point. Just about everyone thus far has been willing to acknowledge Dell lurkers, and perhaps even counterposts. Yours appears to be an idiosyncratic experience.

The OP wants to know if Dell cares about this forum's thoughts. Speaking for myself, I still don't think this forum or the handful (and unfortunately, we are a relative handful) of enthusiasts (fanatics?) it represents is going to sway Dell's opinion on most of its business, design or marketing decisions.

I have nothing against Dell; to me, it's just another multi-(m)(b)illion-dollar American business and I expect it to behave as it does. I consider my relationship with Dell to be commensalistic at best, but since both of us walked away happy, I'm willing to leave it at that.

Your post was 11/03/2005. The XPSG2GU part was listed available around 07/05. So 4 months after the part was being advertised in the Notebook Accessories Online Catalog is now considered a "find" and Dell questioned you on how you found something listed on their website? Come on.... if they harrassed you then they harrassed Mark also. How about we all call Mark and ask him to validate your story?

Ya got that right!
Dell still does some of their own design work , but they're really farming out more and more of their motherboard work to the ODMs in the Far East. I'm not so sure about their chassis design work though...

Which average joe asks about sparkly ? How do they even know the name "Sparkly". Dell wrote a bit on their web site about Sparkly. Addressing the messageboards who talked about it.

In the 1980's who complained about curved tv tubes, and demanded flat screens ? It is the same with Sparkly.

Yes I think mark may have got in a pinch maybe. Because when I sucessfully made my order for my 7800 I asked mark if I could pass on the information to other people who wanted the card also anyway. When he called me to tell me that my order was going to be delayed. He asked me who all I told he said his phone was ringing of the hook. And I told him I posted in a forum his reply was WOW I thought you were gona just tell a couple of freinds. And also said that it would be a challange for him and his team to be able to supply all theese cards.

I can give a rats ass if you beleive it or not and at the time I posted the directions on how to obtain the card it was not listed on any US site at this time and furthemore it was only available in the us as a optional upgrade when purchaseing a new XPS. Only people in canada were able to order the 7800 Go GTX. But no one in the us. A couple of days after I posted then it was posted in assories in the us site after I received a call from the head dude of the inspiron XPS department.

So dude get your head out of your ars and the facts straight before you call someone a liar

Lurkers or no lurkers, the bottom line is that Dell will not listen to the wants of a few hundred of us. They will listen to the wants of companies like my hospital system, which employs >3000 employees, and there are about 1000 dell computers dotted throughout the hospital. Where there are NO coupons or deals to be had, where my department pays about 2-3x more per given computer spec than we ever would. Without batting an eye.

The bottom line is... if everything was given to us up front, what fun would we have without trying to figure out a way of modding it then?

Just my 2 cents.

I don't think Dell cares about the money they make off of forum dwellers like ourselves, but it must know that it's people like us that have sway with friends, coworkers, etc. I personally have caused Dell to get over 200 more sales by recommending them to friends and getting my company to switch to Dell. I wouldn't doubt that many of you have done the same.
and the other perspective is mark is an A1 sales rep whom is swimming in commission from selling $400us upgrades to people whom were being worked under the hysteria that the card would soon jump to $700 (as hissy fitted by sony something or other who said he sat "beside" mark)

..the only problem was dell canada was selling them for $300cdn at the same time, which is roughly what they are now in us

I would suggest that the only pinch mark got was from his commision laden wallet digging into his side

get over it jeff, everyone is happy for the role you played
you can move on now
