why battery dying when Vaio off?

I've had an older PCG-FX190 vaio (XP sp2) since last May and love it. It has win2k PowerPanel installed with no probs too.

The last few times I've retrieved the laptop and opened the lid the last 3 icons on the panel are flashing and the battery is drained. I have a PDF of the Users Manual but it's such bad res I can't read what the double arrow lock icon is for the others are the Num and Cap locks.

I completely SHUT DOWN WINDOWS before closing the lid and the battery is usually fully charged.

What's going on????? I'm totally baffled. I haven't changed anything and have check my power settings etc.

Any ideas?

Any one?

Defective battery maybe?

The double arrow icon is probably scroll lock, it's function in general isn't relevent to your problem. When the battery is dying normally after you've used the notebook for the usual period of time, do the lock buttons flash then or does it only occur when the battery seems to have killed itself?

I hadn't used the laptop for any unusual periods of time and the buttons flashed only when the battery was dead/drained. I would put it away full and open it up the next day drained.

I took the battery to a shop where they will ship it to a manufacturer. It'll be while but supposedly they will be able to tell whether it's the battery or the book. Oh man, if it's my book I'm going to be totally bummed.

It took me a long time to find this great screen in a good used laptop for a great price.
