well i have some money on me enough to buy an ipod but not really sure if it's a good thing to do. i think some other company is going to make something just like the ipod that is way better andcost less than the 400 dollar ipod. but i really would liek to buy it to putm ovies on it so i can i watch them anytime i want to.

tell me if you guys know if anything better than the ipod because if there isn't then i might as well just stick with the 60gb ipod im going to buy

ipods suck....buy a psp, and memory stick, you can put enough music in there , fit movies on the memory stick, play games, and get on the internet for less than an ipod

yea i was thinking about that but a psp costs 250.... what memory sticks are there for psps? games costing $50.00 ouch that hurts....

how many movies can you put on a psp memory stick?

also what kind of batteries does a psp use anyway?

As far as your PSP questions, is your friend, however, think hard about what you will use it for, and get one that does those things, and does them the best. If you aren't going to be buying games much, or surfing the net on it, it isn't the best choice.

As far as MP3/Video Players go. You sound sorta like a neophyte in the market, and as such I would highly suggest an Ipod.
I have an Iriver mp3 player myself, and love it, and several other brands have very nice products too, but Ipod has the user friendly aspect down to a science, and even if a cheaper or more user friendly one came along, that wouldn't make the Ipod any harder to use. I can pick up my friends Ipod and know how to use it fairly well in moments, I wouldn't say the same for them if I handed them my Iriver.

about 1-2 full length movies on a 1g memory wich is about $100 and I think thats as big as u can have maybe 2g I dont remember but thats only like
200 songs!! about 400 on the 2g if they make a 2g...

I myself have a 30G video Ipod and it is awesome!! if you get one I would recommend buying a case. The screen is very nice its awesome, I already have almost 200 songs on it and a fiew short movies I put on and have barely touched the memory its awesome... but u need a special free program u just download if u want to put DVD's on it and it takes some work by moving files around but im sure u half to do the same with PSP. The sound quality is spectacular! My dad and I have an ear for the quality sound of music and we both say its the best thing we have ever heard even better then some $1000 stereo's you hear things in songs u never have heard before I just love it and use it every day! If u have any questions ask me man! I'm there

Freak

little late but welcome to the forums!

but lets be honest...you will not watch a movie on a 2" screen...trust me, i've had my iriver for over a year now and watched only 2 or so movies on it, its nothing but a novelty feature.

shlo.... don't agree on ipod easy to use part. It took me less time to figure out the numerous features of my H320 than it did my friends previous generation color ipod, hell, even the olden grayscale ipod. that said, i prefer a button to a wheel anyday.

i got an ipod, 30 gig solely because i like them and needed a larger mp3 player. the video was an added bonus. if you want something to play music a psp is not it. a gig, only a gig stick is about 100 bucks. with the ipod you get at least 30.

I have a bunch of Family Guy episodes, compressed for the iPod, and they run about 200 Mb each. My guess is the PSP should be about the same.
why do people hate ipods so much? because they're trendy?
No because they sound rubbish, look cheap and tacky, require itunes.
The iriver H340 can play movies. Rockbox firmware has been released.

Whippy, is that a still from Kurosawa's 7 Samurai in your sig? Great flick.

Forget the iPod. Forget PSPs. Forget PDAs. Look for a cheap Inspiron 700m in Dell's outlet. I got mine for $500. It plays movies. It plays music. It fits nicely in my backpack. And, oh yeah, it's a kick-ass computer too.

500 for a 700m is such a sweet deal

I agree with the poster that said to figure out what you want to use it for, and make the purchase based on that. I myself debated getting a 30gig ipod, but realized I don't even own 3 gigs of music, and trying to watch movies on a screen smaller then the psp's would be crap. I have an ipod nano (4 gig) and also a psp.

I bought the psp mainly for gaming, but also justified it to myself because I could surf the net, listen to music, and watch movies. After trying to use it for those four functions, I've found it works really well for 1 and ok for the others. It works great for gaming, screen is big for a portable, and it's a fast lil system. I bought a 512 stick, and can store a few half hour shows on it. I find the battery life for the psp sucks for trying to do all the above. The movies look pretty good. I found it to be to big and awkward for using it as a portable music player, and I think using the internet feature for more then checking email or reading pages with very few images is crap. It gives a lot of messages that it runs out of memory trying to load a page, even with the images and such turned off. Overall, good game system, an ok movie player, but crappy music player and internet functionality. Just my opinion though ...

I don't personally like the ipods...why? I guess ya because they are trendy and there is just somthing about the units that turn me off. That said I have a CreativeLabs ZenXtra 40gb I got over a year ago and still going strong. It ran a little less than $250 last year around christmas time. Its not a video player or any of that junk...just audio which is all I wanted/needed. The thing that was a bummer (untill recently) is that you could not just plug it into your computer and drag and drop. Now you can with the latest firmware so its become more usefull to me now as an easily portable storage device for data as well. Another cool thing if your into voiding your warranty...or when it is up...is alot of people have been successfull updgrading the internal hard drive to something larger when needed. Had I known that before hand I probably would have with went a model that had a smaller HD (cheaper) and just changed it out for a larger one when I needed it.

Anyway I haven't been dissapointed yet, I listen to both audio books and music on it.

It depends on your lifestyle. I travel quite frequently. I watch videos alot on the airplane as I'm flying across country. It's alot easier to pull out my Ipod and watch a movie than it would be to dig my Alienware M7700 out of the overhead. Not to mention you have all the music and videos in one compact device. You can also use the Ipod as an external hard drive.

As a dedicated PC guy I tried very hard to be a hater since it came from Apple. But I have nothing but good things to say about mine.

ugh no...not really...only with a hack

iriver players are all mounted as external hard drives and you just drag and drop your stuff, no software other than your OS (Win/Lin/Mac) required. While for the ipod you gotta get stuff like iTunes (or clone) or gtk-pod (for linux), and its just a pain in the royal @$$.

furthermore, my iRiver is a year older than your ipod...yet i still rape you in all categories in terms of features (except hdd size, mine is 20...but i didn't want the 40gb version).

here is a brief run down:
FM Radio -- iriver yes -- ipod no
Microphone -- yes -- no
265k colors --- yes -- no
ogg support -- yes -- no
line-in recording -- yes -- no
fm recording -- yes -- no
usbotg -- yes -- no
customizable interface -- yes -- no
inSkin -- yes -- no
games -- no -- yes
view pics while music plays -- no -- yes
and according to some review, with the same pair of headphones, the iriver sounds up to 20% better than the ipod on the same .mp3 file.

and thats just with stock firmware, via rockbox:
gameboy emulator
customizable interface
games
plugins
7 second boot time
calandar
contact list
Word (word processing app)

i am not saying a pod is a bad thing..... it just lacks some features

that said, i am not promoting the iRiver in this thread either... i am promoting the Achros GMINI 402. My friend owns a 400 and its about the coolest thing on earth.

ever listened to and/or owned one?? you're wrong on all counts
and if the original poster is gonna get one, might as well get the biggest one, just because more storage is always a good thing

Get a smaller laptop. 700m is the perfect movie player while on a flight Ipod is too small for serious movie watching. I would use it only for short distances on train for work, e.g. 30 min trip.

I do plan to get a portable mp3/video player. I may get the Creative Zen Vision:m since it supports more video formats, better battery, better screen than ipod. I am waiting to read more reviews tho.

Oh for gods sake - not this again, every time a shall I get an ipod thread appears the same crappy list of missing features.

FM Radio -- iriver yes -- ipod no - nobody cares
Microphone -- yes -- no - nobody cares
265k colors --- yes -- no - but nobody watches video on that screen right???
Ogg support -- yes -- no - AAC support -- no -- yes
line-in recording -- yes -- no -as above with microphone
fm recording -- yes -- no -as above with microphone
usbotg -- yes -- no -no idea what this is
customizable interface -- yes -- no -YES!!!!
inSkin -- yes -- no - what is this?
games -- no -- yes -yahoo! games! ipod wins!
view pics while music plays -- no -- yes
and according to some review, with the same pair of headphones, the iriver sounds up to 20% better than the ipod on the same .mp3 file. - pile of crap - the 5g ipod supposedly has excellent sound quality, anyway if your an audiophile looking for the best quality on the go (pared with a $300 amp and $300+ headphones) your better off with a decent CD player.

You also missed some obvious ones off, the ipod could use DivX/Xvid support more than it could use Ogg, the battery life could do with being a bit better when playing video.

Disk use does not require a "hack", its an option in itunes.

If you want a video player get a PSP (but the battery life is gonna be about the same as the 60 gig) - If you want an music player, and all your music isn't in protected WMA format then by all means get an ipod. It seems that the dedicated ipod haters on this board for some reason have never owned one.

Ipod has games, you can also stick pod linux on it and run doom (among other things) if you want.
Plugins???
My nano boots SUBSTANTIALLY faster than 7 seconds
Ipod has a Calender and a contact list
Word??? How the bloody hell are you supposed to word process on an Mp3 player - and why you would want to is beyond me. I mean if were going on about inanely pointless features that one just took the biscuit.
