Gave up on my laptop, and now am building a desktop - Page 2

the desktop 7800gtx does not outperform the ntoebook one if you overclock. my clocks are actually a little higher than the desktops clocks and i have no problems.

For 1500$ you could build a desktop that is roughly twice as fast in games compared to a 7800gtx'ed i9300. You would also never have to worry about upgrade paths, just pop in a new card and it works. and eventually we will need 3 and even 4gb of ram.

Sure, for $1500 you'd have a nice desktop, but no screen to play it on.

Trust me, if I had the money to get a kicka$$ desktop, I'd do it in an instant. But at this point I like being able to game mobily; and the 9300 is a helluva good deal when you're talking about a gaming system.

The opterons overclock far better than the x2's, I second a 165 or 170 opteron. see my sig, my 165 hits 2.8 on air, 2.9 -3 on water

Well part of the fun of having a laptop is having to hack it to death in order to upgrade. desktops are too easy.

anyway, it is out of hte question cause i need a lappy for college. a nice possible solution would have been a desktop, a 700m, and a 2005fpw lcd. although it would have cost quite a bit more, and i doubt i would be able to get the same gfx performance with it. 3dmark05 isnt everything. it is very cpu limited so even if a desktop get 9000 points in 05, it wont perform too much better than our lappies which only score 7000.

Also, even with the backlight bleeding and all the problems these lcds have, 1920x1200 on a glossy 17" is just too good to pass up.

There are limits to a laptop it doesn't matter, if you say there are no limits to a laptop you need to talk to Shoman, as he hit the limit like a brick wall and decided to get a desktop. Overclocking, and don't ever compare the laptop 7800 GTX to the desktop version again, that's a horrible comparision, especially for the noobs out there going oh I spent 280 on a 7800 GTX and it's the same as the one for a desktop. First off the clock speeds are completly differnt and the level of stability as well. That BOLT on fan on the desktop version does a lot more then are laptop versions, plus the ability to SLI leaves room for the possibilty of expansion, and I think many of you don't realize what kind of differnce is made when you put in a 10,000 rpm harddrive in your desktop when loading something. I for one have a really nice 9300 IMO, however I'm still not satisfied with my load times for things.

I can't disagree with you. I made the comparison in prices, but I'm sure the desktop would blow the 9300 in many aspects if the desktop is build with high end parts. I'm just saying that for the price, the 9300 is a great deal for a gaming rig, even when compared to a desktop. No doubt it's very limited in upgradability, but then I have an excuse to get a new notebook in two years. The 17" WUXGA is what really makes it for me. I want to be able to game with semi-high settings on a nice monitor. I'm not the kind of person that has to have THE BEST setup all the time, and if you are, and have the money to, a desktop is definitely a good option for you. If you could buy a 17" WUXGA LCD for a desktop, I'd be seriously interested; but I'm now addicted to widescreens at high res, so if I'd get a desktop I'd have to invest in an expensive screen, which would admittedly look better than the 9300's screen, but would end up costing more after all is said and done.

With all that said, if you want to sell your 9300, I'm interested. What kind of a warranty you have on it?

LCD response times

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned slow response times...

I'll tell ya, you don't know what slow response times are until you try my 3-year-old Viewsonic 17" LCD.

I have a 21" CRT monitor that I was dual-screening (for work) and I decided to try the old Viewsonic, since it wasn't quite the desktop-space monster that the CRT is. I tried it out on COD2 and blammo instant headache from the severe ghosting. Never again will I complain about my laptop WUXGA!
