Fujitsu LifeBook N5010 Series
Intel Pentium4 3.0Ghz processor (with Hyper Threading)
512MB 333 Memory
60GB Hard-Disk (Model: Fujitsu MHT2060AT)
16” Crystal View Screen
DVD-RW Combo (Model: Toshiba DVD-ROM SDR6112F)
(4) USB 2.0 Ports, (1) 1394 Port
Wireless 802.11a,b/g (Models: Atheros AR5001X+) (Realtek RTL8139/810x)
(2) Generic PCMCIA Slots
That should cover the basics of this phenomenal machine. Any questions, feel free to ask.
Let’s start off with the day I received it:
Free 2-day FedEx shipping (Ordered Dec. 30th, but due to New Years received Friday, January 2nd). Free shipping is always perfect.
I first opened the well-packaged box and they individually boxed the notebook itself as well as an additional box for the additional pieces (CD package, AC Adapter, etc).
All I could say after pulling out the laptop was “Wow.” It is a beast of a machine, I’ll let everyone know well in advanced, But keep in mind: It is designed for a desktop replacement. The 16” screen is simply marvelous. I doubt there are many others out there with a quality-grade technology screen that the N5 offers. If anyone is familiar with the quality of that in the predecessor, The N3, You’ll simply be just as amazed with the N5 (I’m trying to find the exact screen model as well as response time and specifications, any assistance as to where I might find this information would be appreciated.)
I plugged the magnificent piece of work in, and fired her up (Yes, I prefer to call it a she). Upon booting, there is one, small (Can’t even see it once windows is loaded) dead green pixel. It won’t be going back, I can assure you! The native resolution is 1400 x 1050, Those scared this is too high, Your wrong: It’s perfect. I’m a normal desktop user that came from a continuous resolution of 1280x1024 and this is even better.
Everything appears to work flawlessly, (Mind you I chose a word because I have yet to install anything, But I assure you more results will come - Just ask me and I’ll gladly do some work with the machine.)
As far as build quality, I was rather impressed with the one’s at Fry’s Electronics (Which were N3’s) and it seemed to get even better (Not to mention prettier!) I’m not noticing any flimsy or bending parts. The keyboard doesn’t creek (except for the space-bar, It is giving a slight squeak - It doesn’t seem like anything to be concerned about however)
As far as sound is concerned, I love the control they designed for switching the volume - it’s a small “turning” dial to increase/decrease the volume. There are two speakers (One on each side of the keyboard), I’ve played the new 311 CD on the DVD Player and it put out some fine tunes for a laptop (I did notice, Generally are laptops not able to boast Bass- I wasn’t able to add any bass - Will look into further)
Heat: I’ve owned one other laptop- An old NEC 233 (Still runs btw) and as far as I’m concerned, It gets about an average rate of heat. The left is where the hard-drive is and that is warm, not scolding, but warm - we’ll see how it goes with more use (and gaming).
The noise: Average work (Word Processing and thumbing through WebPages and the loudest thing I hear is me clicking away at the keys) and I can’t hear anything. But again, That’s simply under light settings, The real test will be more affluent and will include gaming.
Sorry this review is rather lacking at the start, But with some time and patience, maybe I can get you guys a hardcore piece of work
Those are my comments with the first hour of it.
Pictures will be posted as soon as I find the damn charger for the digital camera!

Rock on. Good to hear Fujitsu put out a contender. My first laptop was a Fuji. Had my problems, but I think it was the unit, not the company.

What's that thing have for vid memory? And where'd you buy it from?
I've been looking recently. Altho' I really want to buy brianl's AW from him, I haven't heard back from him, so I'm trying to keep my eyes open just in case.

Edit: Just looked up the specs. 64mb. Darn- I'm trying to stick w/ 128mb on the vid card route. And I'd like to have a 16" UXGA, not SXGA

Hopefully it fits for what you want, though

The SXGA is more than enough considering it is 1400x1050 and insanely incredible screen technology,
But if you need the resolution, Sure.
64MB Memory seems efficient, Haven't tested any games though, I need to find them.

Your Fujitsu would've been the perfect laptop for me except for the 64 MB video card. You're really going to need more video RAM to run the next generation of big-time games, like Doom 3 and HL2, at their best settings. I even asked Fuji if their video card was upgradeable, but the answer was no. If you're not a hard core gamer, the 5010 oughtta provide plenty of punch for you.

This is the exact laptop I want. I would like to have the 128MB card, but it's not a necessity for me. I'm a gamer, but I do most of my gaming on my PS2. I play some computer games, but only the occasional new game. Most of the time if I buy a computer game, it's an old discount or clearance game.

I use my computer mostly for surfing the web, listening to music, burning cds, etc... But I still like to have a powerful machine.

How is the battery life with this box?

Nice Review jmkay03:

Is there anything else you can add now that you have had it a few days? Have you tried anything more intense such as games? I'm wondering how well it stands up under pressure when the fans kick in. Does it get very loud or hot after it is under load for example? Anyway thanks for taking the time to share with us. Anything else you could add would be appreciated since you're the only one we know who owns one of these awesome machines. Also is there any ghosting when playing games or other fast movement. Thanks.

KPEddison: I'll get right on it
johnh123: Battery life is what you'd expect out of a Pentium 4 processor with H\T..The website will tell you it lasts 2 hours.. From my experience it's lasted about that
batter really gets absorbed while your gaming..
A note, is that I've noticed while gaming, This laptop seems to get saucy hot and that makes me wonder a bit. I'm investigating it now, because it might cause a performance issue
I'll be running some checks to figure out how hot the thing actually gets.
Are there any recommendations for temperature watching software?
I'll be probably using the bios.

Jeremy:

I use a Free app called AIDA32 to check my Desktop Temps:
http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php
Open the app then look under Computer>Sensor. I don't know if it will work for Notebook Temps but it is a good app to have anyway.

The only bad things that I have heard about Fujitsu is screen ghosting on the older screens. (don't know about the new 16" LCD). Also extremely loud fans and that they get really hot. But from what I hear most of the new desktop replacement Laptops get fairly hot, so I don't know what is considered normal. Someone else may know a better app for checking temperatures. Are the fans kicking on a lot? Oh I did have one question about the sound. Is there any clicking, popping, crackling, or is it pretty clean sounding? I don't care if it is too loud or low on Bass because I'm going to hook it up to my stereo anyway. I'm still deciding between the Fujitsu N5010 and the Sager 5680. At least I've got it narrowed down to 2. Thanks for answering our questions.

Take it easy

KP:

Thanks for recommendation, I will be trying it out..
I've installed MotherBoardMonitor but it doesn't seem to recognize my mainboard...And I have no clue what motherboard is on this thing, so I've e-mailed technical support and am awaiting an answer..
On the ghosting situation.. Honestly I have not noticed any during gaming, Perfectly clear..As far as text on a website, I do notice the text will slur together when scrolling up and down, But I'm not too sure if its much to be concerned about.
The fans definatley kick in while gaming..They will run every now and then when I want to start making the thing think (like loading multiple browsers, Instant Messenging, Outlook, etc) - But it'll run for a few seconds then either turn off or go to I suppose the lowest setting which is not loud at all.
I want to figure out this heat issue and will repost as soon as I can find some exact information. Thanks for your patience!
Edit: Tried your recommended application..Sensor didn't seem to show anything up. I'm giving up on ideas what to do. But will continue to work with it..
