Uh the G4 I have DEFINITLY has a fan. It may not be very loud or kick on that much, but trust me it is there.

I want to throw my Z71v in the garbage and buy a Macbook. Seriously, OS X + Core Duo + X1600 = I want to cry.

2GB RAM
1680x1050 15.4 widescreen
256MB X1600
120GB SATA
8x DVDRW

DVI out (and vga for projectors)
Carbon fiber 1.6-1" thick 6Lbs

MacBook

1GB RAM
1140x900 WS
256MB x1600
100GB SATA
4x DVD
Camera
DVI out
metal 1" thick 5.6lbs

Apples already over priced and underspec'd and the PC makers have already "speed bumped" Apple.
great, the "diss macs without thinking" has already begun...er, continued...

personally i couldn't pull up any prices for the acer, but their top end 8xxx systems typically go for around $2299-2499, w/ the low end usually being maybe $1999. how are they out-selling apple again given the lighter weight and smaller size of the MacBook?

it's funny how anyone who gives a sh!t about mobility in a notebook, or has a clue about the various brackets of notebooks, knows u pay a price for less weight and thinner form factor of the machine yet this sort of stuff gets spit out the second a "new and improved" mac comes out. give me a break. u'd look at form factor and price within PC brands (sony, dell, toshiba, samsung all have their pricey "under-powered" thin laptops) but u don't even bother to account for that in a Mac? lame. give credit where credit is due. that's one sweet ass system for a TRUE 1" notebook w/ a 15" screen. now if someone rolls out the exact same specs in a nearly identical form factor, then you BEGIN to have an argument. until then, keep looking for excuses to undercut a mac.

btw, the 9.5mm optical drives (currently 4x) are used in windows systems as well, perhaps u should point them out since you're "just comparing specs". it's also pretty clear that wedge shaped notebooks enable makers to claim a thinner form factor than they actually have. again throw the same equipment in a truly 1" acer and see how it pans out for specs and price.

i think this is the real competition from the pc world to the apple. it costs the same($2000) but the specs are a little higher across the board. of course, this has still not been updated to core duo, but i think they will just add a 1.8ghz DC and replace the x700 with the x1600. the only downside i see with this one is the non-widescreen lcd(although the glossyness makes up for that)

Anyway, i would be interested to hear what you think makes hte macbook better than a core duo version of the v6va

On the Powerbook, the fans are on the left and right sides, near the front of the computer. The grills wrap under the chassis.

The MacBook moved the fans to the back of the computer.

Is the G4 or G5 64bit??? This intel core duo (yonah) is a 32 bit processor, right?
The G5 is 64-bit, I believe the G4 is 32-bit
post #108 of 178
Gonzo is right

G4=32 Bit
G5=64 Bit

I'm pretty sure I don't agree with the use of ultra-slim drives. I'd be more than willing to live with a computer that's a tenth of an inch bigger if it means better features. Than again Apple has always been willing to trade functionality for coolness.
Well it is a laptop, a 15.4" inch laptop which I think is designed as a mobile computer. If it was a 17" desktop replacement laptop then a better, bigger, faster drive would be logical to have.
Yeah, also the one inch is a big selling point, to my knowledge its the only notebook on the market that can meet that size and have this performance. Thats something you gotta exploit.

again, teh v6va above is the same dimensions, if not smaller. it just hasnt been updated to core duo yet, which is understandable cause asus usually has a product in stock when they announce it.

i don't disagree. my main point was that for ANY brand, tradeoffs occur when the form factor is pushed to the limit at the same time that prices go up for pushing said limit. and again, this truth in notebooks just happens to go unmentioned in the "analysis" provided.

GO Merom

I hope Mr Jobs will OK Merom in the future MacBook.
Just a general comment and question. Does anyone know Apple is looking to make a Merom MacBook in the near future? It is logical to think that they will try and put one out, but in Apple fashion they usually take a long time to update their notebooks so that they can get the design right. Also, is it true that the new MacBooks can triple boot with Tiger/Vista/Linux?

I am currently loving my Ferrari, but if Apple makes a notebook that can run Vista and Tiger then I will definately get me one!
