I hope to god they're not using BIOS.

Looks like educational pricing is available... $1799 for the 1.67 and $2299 for the 1.83. Nothing major, but they also discount the price of the AppleCare package to $239. Not a bad savings, just not Earth shattering.

Positives:
Intel
expresscard
looks - its 1" thin!
Ability to put windows on it
x1600 with dual link dvi (pc makers PLEASE get rid of that stupid, crappy, pointless vga)
sata hard drives
Web cam

Negatives:
Modem - i know but its just in case
Price - 2k for base model
No card reader, would be nice for a 4 in 1 with ms, sd etc.
Erm, what is apple exteme wireless, sounds silly to me, put an atheros in there
battery life
Only 2 usb
As an extra - could have put and e-sata instead of the connection below.

And firewire, who cares its stupid!

I doubt that you are going to get windows to run on it in a day. The big thing will be drivers. iSight won't work, and I would guess that the ATI drivers are not standard because of the dual-link support. The camera you can live without but bad video drivers will means most games won't play well.

Did any one else notice the 1440x900 resolution. It will be a while before I trade down from 1920x1200.

If I remember correctly, all x1K cards from ATI are dual-link DVI capable, so that won't be an issue.

The 1440x900 is the same as the previously update PB's. I don't like 1920x1200, especially on a 15". The font is just too small for me. I think the current resolution is great.

Maybe Steve will pull another, "One More Thing..." and introduce the Mac Mini Media Center. Trying to watch the keynote now, it's taking forever to load, lol.

1920x1200 on a 17" is like 1600x1050 on a 15.4", so you won't notice much of a difference as far as text size and all that.

Vid drivers you would use Omega drivers - they are based on catalyst and all x1k support dual link. Problem devices could be:

isight/webcam - not too sure about this
expresscard - but may be able to use xp default
Wireless network - so change the silly apple extreme and put an intel 3945abg in there, easy. But the apple extreme might work in xp
Bluetooth - again default xp drivers
Wired network - as above

Any reason why the price in Powerbooks (both online retail and referbished) didn't go down in Canada like in the USA? Or are they just lazy to update the Canadain store?

Powerbook 12" at $1199 is nice (USA Store).

I've also tried downloading/streaming the keynote but the site is plugged up, did they mention anything about 12" or 13.3" version?

BTW, any educational discounts on referbs?

I'm still seeing $1500 for 12" in the US store.

That was the referb price. Sorry about the poor labeling...I've just also been told the 1499 was the same price by someone on IRC...though I thought it was 1699 before for some reason.

BTW got any answers for the rest of my previous post? I want a laptop badly, but if I buy everything legit for Mac, I need to pace myself.

SWEET!!!!

I've been waiting for these to come out for a while now. This is so awsome! Wonder what the battery life is on this?
Since they are using Intel's new Core technology "Pentium M" they should have called the new Macs "Apple Cores" or "Apple Core Duo"
Everyone keeps stating that this will be able to run windows, but I see no proof from apple at all. Does anyone know for sure that you will be able to run windows on it?

Looks nice, interesting name...

But here's the things I'm wondering...

Where did firewire 800 go? Why is the DVD burner now a 4x instead of an 8x (I'm almost definite mine's an 8x)? Where's the S-video? Where's the PMCIA slot and what is ExpressCard/34? And now the modem is an optional external version (sure).

All of the new stuff is cool, looks powerful, etc etc. Fun times ahead. But what's up with firewire 800 and the burner?!

What's the Core processor, and what's the difference between that and Yonah?
Firewire 800 is gone as is S-Video, no idea about the burner. Expresscard is supposed to be backwards compatible with PCMIA, and the Core Processor is Yonah.

wow, i never thought i'd say this, but at the moment i am counting the things in my room i can sell to buy this thing. OMG this thing is AMAZING

firewire is gone becuase

a) it is useless, just a marketing gimick that never got off the ground.
b) they are now using intel chipsets, so they can no longer decide what they want to put in them. this is basically just another pc with a webcam.

pcmcia was replaced with pcie like ^ said.

macbook sounds almost as stupid as might mouse.

anyway, were just a few weeks away from seeing a similairly speced "I7000" from dell for about $800. I know you guys hate to admit this, but you know its true.

Either way, good to finally see them start using a decent video card.

As for windows, as mentioned before, there is no BIOS, and they have blocked windows install cds from the bootup selector thingy. Im sure there is a way to get around that, but realistically, windows on a mac is just going to be a geeky thing that wont take off.

To anyone that likes OSX though, this is good news. Within a few months(possibly weeks, or even days) you will be able to buy a pc and run osx on it natively. If you want to triple boot osx/linux/vista, i think getting a pc will be the better option.

And to all you amd lovers, i think the sight of Otellini on the stage with jobs today pissed some dell people off, cause they are threatening to move to amd again.

Actually, PCMCIA is replaced by ExpressCard, not PCI-E.
