I have one application that does not run on OSX so dual-boot is my only option. Now all I need is 64-bit

I mean, aslong as you can dual boot Im happy, it would just be...nice ya know?
That would be cool. Fast OS Switching, similar to Apple's Fast User Switching, lol.

At least it still has Firewire 400. I do use that for DV video. Even on a laptop! I also use it for my Epson R800 printer. I've no use for FW800, but standard FW, yes.
Gonzo, you'd have to use a Virtual PC emulator, at least at this point... There may be a day yet when the OS is flashed based and you can just switch back and forth... Or virtually divide your PC: 1 processor and 1 stick of RAM for one OS, and the other processor and stick of RAM for the other and view both at the same time on the monitor! Probably way to hard to make that a reality, but it sounds cool.

That would be kind of useless, because you won't really need to run both at the exact same time, and cutting everything in half wouldn't be really worth it IMO.

You're right there. Just sounded like something interesting... Like climbing a mountain simply because it is there..

Actually, Intel's already demonstrated something similar. And with VT and Pacifica, that sort of virtual splitting of hardware isn't too far away.

(And no, you don't have to run both at the same time, you fire up the OS you want to run, and then shut it down when you don't need it.)

Apple doesn't design PCs

Quote:
Apple has always had the best hardware designs, and charged a premium for them
Wrong. In the past that was true with the Nubus macs and early powerpc macs where apple designed every IC and circuit board. But later systems outsource the design or use off the shelf ICs to cut costs.

The only thing Apple designs now is the case look and feel, which they do very very well. There will not be a single PC 15.4" laptop that looks as good or as thin as the MacBook (maybe the sharp X50).

But the internals are a standard intel laptop system board with standard sound, ethernet, modem chipsets no different from any other laptop provided by Dell, Acer or HP. Not that that is bad....standardization means lower prices, and since Intel is the only vendor delivering a dual core laptop solution that can work in a 1" thick single fan apple case, Apple had no choice but to drop powerpc.

Firewire 800 is great for things like external HDs for people that do a lot of Audio or Video work. Also it is used in some audio interfaces, and I would imagine in a few cameras, though video is not my strong suit. So losing it hurts for some of us.

To run multiple OSes at the same time, take alook at virtualization technology, as someone already pointed out half of the work behind it for people like Intel and AMD are starting to support it in their hardware. But dont forget the software side of things and take a look at Zen Hypervisor and the like.

One major problem is that Vista will be the first Windows OS that will support the replacement for the PC BIOS out of the box really so I would imagine other versions of windows would have to be patched to support that. Other than that though I see no reason Windows couldnt run. Personally I will be setting up Linux

it isnt "apples" fast user switching. xp had it first AFAIK.

back to the wifi support under windows, im pretty sure that it will work since the "airport" in this thing is probably just a standard intel centrino deal.

That's a positive? I guess if you have an app that won't run on OSX. I pray every night for the day windoze is out of my life.

And firewire, who cares its stupid!
Try using a digital camcorder with USB or having to deal witht he CPU slowdowns with USB. Yes, computers actually do things other than play doom.

I foresee merom, conroe, and even possibly woodcrest at WWDC.

I feel dumb answering my own question, but just incase someone finds this useful, I just gave Apple a call and they do not give the educational discounts on referbs.

No XP looks like we will have to wait for Vista

I used the sony fs 15.4" a couple days ago and i was suprised that the fan on it barely ever turned on. It is possible to run a pentium m fanless if the case is designed correctly, but it would get pretty hot when under max load.
previous PowerBooks were fanless, I am curious what's up with this one then...
