Need XPS M170 buying advice

Hi all,

This is the first laptop I have bought and I could do with some advice as Im quite paranoid about laptops going out of date quickly and about to spent almost £2000

I am still in the trail period of 7 days and this is what I have in my possession right now:

dell xps m170
4 year on site service
Intel® Pentium® M 770 2.13GHz
xp pro
2048MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM
100GB (7,200rpm) IDE Hard Drive
256MB DDR 3, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX, PCI-Express x16
8X DVD+/-RW
two batteries

Thats about it. Ill be using it for my business which consists of mainly photoshop and online games like swg.

This is costing me £1950. My problem is now there are duel processors out there and Im sure Dell are about to bring out new laptops like sony are now doing and the fact that this laptop has been around for almost a year I think is it worth me spending so much on for the next 3 years at this price or send it back and wait a while?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks
Jay

There's nothing to be paranoid about.

Even if you get dual core, it will be out of date just as fast.

I bought my M170 for my business. I do alot of side photoshop and web stuff which barely even phases the thing. I do a bit of gaming as well and it's great on this system. I don't regret the purchase at all, its fun, fast and the blinky lights are great.

That said, I do know that it will be obsolete sometime next year but that doesn't make it un-useable. Certainly not for the applications your running.

In my opinion you have to ask yourself if you really need a laptop. I thought I did and bought a xps2. I dont use it very much for what I intended it for (bring it
to work and such). I personnal should have bought a desktop as I like tinkering around with them much more, and the upgrade path is much easier.

I still love my Gen2, but if your asking yourself questions about it already, ship it back... IMHO

It won;t be obselete. It'll be dated. It'll run pretty much whatever you need for sometime to come. It'll be a while before Vista comes out and programs/games are written to fully start utilizing the dual core and it's capacities. By then, You'll want a new PC anyways.

You can forever sit and wait for somethign to come out to be on the cutting edge, the problem is.. You forever be sitting, waiting, without buying anything to use. Tech is to fast and changing to sit and ponder/wait for the next tech/level.

If the money is a stretch, return it and buy something you NEED for the apps you run, desktop or notebook (it's really a lifestyle choice). Trailing end technologies will suit the VAST amount of PC users, will last well for 3-4 years before the need to upgrade to another (relatively cheap) system.

If you genuinely need to be at the cutting edge of technology, get a desktop they generally offer easier and cheaper upgrades before requiring a full replacement.

I'd guess that you're really attracted to your M170 and it will last you years for your real needs, just stop looking at the latest and greatest, with the exception of a small percentage of the population - it's all for bragging rights (and you know how much they cost).

yeah i just tried to render a one second water scene to quicktime with cinema4d which is a bad idea with a 1.6, and it took 13 hours. yep reflection, transparent materials, and metaballs kill your render time and i just through that out their incase anybody here uses that program but i definately want a dual core lappy processor... like bad.
