I think it was Bargainseeker that stated that there were three main companies: Clevo, Wistron (Taiwan) and Compal (China). This is a question:

CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG

DELL: Made by COMPAL
GATEWAY: Made by Wistron (better than COMPAL)
SAGER/HP/COMPAQ/ETC: ?

SO this tells me all computers are almost identical when it comes to these companies pumping out the barebones for companies to fill. I see allot of arguements over these computer is better than that one - but - it seems sometimes these computers are made ultimately by the same company.

Close, but not quite entirely correct. 70% of notebooks worldwide are made by companies with headquarters in Taiwan. Of those notebooks, 75% are actually manufactured in mainland China. These Taiwan based notebook manufacturers include Compal, Quanta, Acer, Asustek, Wistron, Inventec, Mitac, Clevo, Arima, ECS and others. Other notebooks are made in Korea by Samsung and LG Electronics. Some notebooks are also assembled in Malaysia, Mexico, Ireland and Japan.

Dell and HP both buy from a number of manufacturers including Compal, Quanta, Samsung and Wistron. To get a better idea of who buys from whom, read the DigiTimes and the Taiwan High Tech order announcements archive.

Individual Asian manufacturers have their own histories, reputations, areas of expertise, and "personalities" just like individual U.S. corporations. Like you, I find arguments based on U.S. brand name nonsensical. For example, saying that a Dell 8600 is better made than a Compaq X1000. Actually, both are made by Compal (probably in the same or neighboring factories).

Going back to your original question, I don't know of any companies that manufacture barebones laptops in the United States though there are many here who do the final customer configuration in this country (CPU, RAM, hard drive & optical drive).

By the way, SAGER, et all are manufactured by CLEVO.
I think there's a company in Fremont that manufactures a laptop, but not sure. And supposedly this company makes laptops here in the USA: http://www.unionmadecomputers.com/
But getting to the heart of your question, what's the point? Are you an anti-globlalist? Remember, the US became a country because we wanted to get in on the action that Britain tried to keep for itself.

Are you being facetious?

Assuming your statement is not tongue in cheek, while there are some major chip manufacturers in Silicon Valley, they don't make them all or even a goodly percentage of them. At this point, most of the chip production there is for specialty and R&D. And no, they don't mine Silicon there. They do grow it though. Silicon is one of the most common materials on the planet. Nearly every beach has oodles and oodles. Most mountains and rocks of all sizes have lots of silicon. Its kind of surprising the earth didn't develop a silicon life form rather than carbon based.

What about IBM or Mac. I know only them and Acer actually make their own laptops, so I have somewhat of a feeling that they MAY be made in the US.

I am far from being an anti-globalist or accept Isreal movement demonstrator. It is amazing how out of context one can pave. It was a question that seems to have brought not to many answers. Allot of companies (most recently IBM) have out-sourced an abundance of there production (even the tech assistance) overseas since they cannot compete against the labor cost. I was curious who was left...1st and second, really know how to truly compare two manufactured computers and thanks to BargainSeeker I am well on my way.

I believe all Apple computers are made in the U.S.

Nope, not all anyway though some of the models may be. If you look at that site I referenced, they have a list of all American Made stuff.

Absolutely untrue, Apple notebooks are made by Asustek, Quanta and Compal. Go to this page and do a find on Apple to see for yourself.

The large notebook vendors that come the closest to making their own are IBM and Toshiba, but neither of these companies have notebook factories in the U.S. Also, to stay competitive, both IBM and Toshiba are increasing the portion of notebooks that they subcontract to ODMs.
