Apples and Oranges...

The 7800 Will blow the doors off of the x1600 in sheer gaming performance. You can expect about double the score for 3dMark2k5. But, the x1600 is a much more mobile GPU (i.e. lower power consumtion, less heat, smaller heat sinks for less weight, etc...) You will only find those 7800s in those bigger 17" lappys like the 5720 and XPS II, etc...

It really depend on what you want to do. The Macs come with the best software for video and music editing and basically doing real work. If you're a gamer however, avoid the mac. You will have to wait much longer fo the latest game titles. And very often some of them won't even be made for the Mac. For example, have you ever heard any Mac users talk about how cool Half-Life looks on their Mac? No! Because they don't have HL on their Mac, and probably never will.

Hes talking about the Macbook Pro, so theres always a chance he can dual boot.

Off the top of my head, isnt the X1600 a midrange card, comparable to the 6800go? If so, This is a pretty ok card, I can run most of my games at med-hi settings (exept for fear) Maybe he really dosent need the latest and greatest. (with 6800go)

Just a thought.

i dont understand why all people try to compare midrage to highend..
nvidia 7800 in the same category as the ati x1800
nvidia 7600 in the same category as the ati x1600
etc etc

Yeah! Actually, from the test results I've seen on proffessional review sites such as Tom's Harware, Anantech, etc..., it looks like even the 6800go is somewhat faster than the x1600.

Made a thread on X1600 vs. 6800GO, though a bunch went off topic and into the realm of the 7800.

You can't really compare a Mac and a PC. 5720 is for the games and multimedia, Mac is well, who knows.. And then you've got the comparison between 17 inch laptops and 15.4 inch laptops.

For the Record.

using 3dmark 2005 as a benchmark.

The Geforce 7800 GTX Go will score around 6600 points stock

The Geforce 6800 Ultra will score around 5200 Points stock

The Radeon X1600 Mobility will score around 4400 Points stock (taken from the Acer TM8204 benches posted by PCmag. Not the 3800 points the Asus laptop scored most likely with lowered GPU clocks)

The Geforce 6800 Go will score around 3500 points stock.

The Radeon X700 mobility will score around 2400 points stock.

There tend to be different GPU clock speeds and Video Ram clock speeds implemented between almost every different laptop on the market, the OEM sets the clocks based on the Thermal envelope of the laptop they are building, so allow some variance to the scores but they are pretty accurate for the default ranges you will see.

Oh and one more thing the X1600 and the 7800 GTX are not directly comparble, this is more than an issue of midrange vs high end, the X1600 is intended for mainstream laptops weighing 5~7 lbs, and the 7800 GTX can be found in laptops ranging from just under 9lbs (Dell XPS M170 listed as 8.6 lbs) to laptops weighing as much as 14 lbs.

Oh wow! Ok! So the x1600 is a little faster than I thought. COOL!!!

Yea the x1600 in the new MacBook looks like a nice combination, I hope the reviews come out soon and one of them answers the question on if XP will run natively on it.

Imagine a dual booting MacBook Tiger / XP

A nice gaming & unix dev machine

DUDE!

If you are going for that extreme in video card TODAY...DOES IT REALLY make any different between the two cards which one you have...they are ahead of of the pack as it is already heheheh

Make no difference to me...

Just pick base upon the laptop you like.

It makes a huge difference. GPU limitations are my main gripe with laptops. I'm also suprised how rarely laptops scale their LCD resolution to the practicle limits of what the GPU can reasonably game at.

Example, 1920x1200 is simply too much for a 7800GTX. 1680x1050 is too much for an x700. etc. etc. Gaming at non-native LCD res is the pits. Apple, typically seems to have gotten it just right....1440x900 is probably just right for the x1600.

Although I love the widescreen thin and light looks and weight, my next laptop will probably be some 17" bohemeath with a 7800GTX.

lol

I can max out everything but FEAR with my 7800GTX
