I have the same issue, the audio is very weak from the onboard sound indeed. If I pull it out half way it is louder, but not as clear, and it shouldnt have to do that anyway.

what speaker system.

From the onboard sound card you will not get booming audio, but t should be loud enough to make you happy.

In your owners manual it tells you what each of your plugs does. In the owners manual to the speakers, it will tell you what color is sub and center, which is rear and which is front. Then, in your ownermanual for the laptop, it will tell you where to stick the center, rear, and front connectors.

To answer your question, no you do not NEED to use that connector. But somewhere in the mnual (8890 is 3-28) it will tell you which hole to put each connector in. Still have questions feel free.

But remember, that the sound card is not that powerful. I went with an extigy and it go much louder than it was before.

I followed the directions and went over this with tech support, and plain and simple the sound is weak. I say this only because I am comparing it to my other laptops. I have the same setup of speakers I used on my Dell and my IBM and they sound descent, not great like the extigy, however the onboard sound on the 8890 is very low, low enough that if I actually use headphones its not usable as a CD player or to watch a video on.

this is along the same lines as ryan's post: I just thought it could use a little clarifying, if i am not mistaken...

If you have the 8890, with the ac97 sound then you need to go to control panel, sound effect manager, there you have some tabs to select from. Go to speaker configuration and select "6-channel mode for 5.1 speaker output." it should show you what each mini plug input on the side of your computer does. If this is not what you were looking for, please clarify. Thanks! cheers!

sorry maybe the problem was unclear. im using a surround sound system. a home audio system that uses speaker wires that connect to an amp. how do i hook each set of speakers into the computer. do u have to have a certain devices that the speaker wires go in to to do that?????

the fix to this is crude and should be done at your own risk.

you could get 3 plugs which connect into the onboard soundcard, then splice them into the speaker cords... or into the amp. it is unclear as to which u r trying to do. i can provide pics in a week if need be, as my adaptor is at home, and i am at school.

the onboard spu (sound processing unit) really isn't that bad, its all about the amp that ur using. and as for headphones, try those 3d gaming headphones i have heard heartell about here on the forums. the ones with 3d imageing. i have some ordered but i do not remember the brand...

jenair, I think you will need to attach your speakers to a 5.1 capable amplifier. You can get pretty cheap ones at best buy these days. The, set your laptop for SPDIF output and connect the output to the SPDIF input on the amplifier. Someone else may have a better plan, but I think is your best bet. All the SPDIF setting stuff is in the user manual.

I've been trying to hook my laptop up to my sound system. I think the cables Jenair suggested will work perfect.
Thanks for the help

jenair, If you are using the cables that are shown on the site you linked to, you cannot use SPDIF. SPDIF is a single cable connection to an Amp that supports SPDIF in. You should be able to use those cables with no problem, but you will use them in 2 channel stereo mode. Go to the control panels and open the Sound Effects Manager, or something like that. I don't have the laptop with me here at work, so I can't give you exact instructions. There is a tab that is something like "Configuration" or "Speaker Setup" or something along those lines. You want to chose the 2 speaker mode and connect the minijack end of the cord into the green connector. That will be line out. Then double-click the volume control in the task bar and bring up the system volumes and all the other ones to full. That should get you going.
