19" widescreen dual Go 7800 SLI notebook announced! - Page 3

hmmm. somthing else everybody might want to consider, in a normal notebook the hottest parts are the cpu and the graphics card and maybe the HD, how are they going to balance two gpu's? i think that either there will be three warm spots or one warm spot and another spot being used for spot welding... it'll be ntresting to see how they handle the heat issues

..more fans ! if you think the 9750 or 9880 is loud....ha ! usually the HDD is pretty cool and even my 4800+ doesn't really go past 53C.

why not just buy a bloody SFF with a 19" screen?? probably more portable, would run cooler, and has more upgrade options. Honestly why keep building bigger and bigger instead of trying to fit more into smaller? eg: 7800 in 14" etc.

Come on, that's just stupidly ridiculous.

So . . . you actually think that an SFF with 19" monitor would be more portable that a laptop? So I guess it is easier to carry around a monitor, keyboard and SFF case than it is to close the lid and walk out the door . . . interesting. Now add the webcam and speakers with all the wires and you are really not as portable. Plus not many SFF have SLI, multiple optical and HD drives (unless they are in larger boxed which makes them less portable). SFF doesnt have much on the upgrade factor either. This is america for gods sake, home of the supersize!

mmm good point... but still, where's the line to draw? personally I think it was drawn at 15.4 and 17's are just too big.

See, that's your opinion. I've got 2 17" notebooks right now and in no way do I feel that's "too big." We all have our own ideas, wants and needs. If there wasn't a market, they wouldn't be spending the money to cram a 19" LCD onto a notebook body. I, for one, would definitely go for a 19" if possible. Way I see it, 15.4" is too small. A regular 15" is basically useless

mmmmm......I reckon the debate re "Notebook" size is misleading.....At 19" I think we are now talking about a "portable computer" ....Not a bigger "Laptop/Notebook".

The order is really....tablet portable......laptop portable.......and the 19" and above widescreen portable.

The name of the game is the combination of relative portability and Ultimate power. People who buy these things (like me) generally never pack them around (I use a IBM T43 for that).

The biggest problem is finding a bag to securely hold it. The 2nd problem is weight which will be around 25-30 lbs when the 21in LCD version is ready. There will be a lot more room to add other goodies.
can you wait till they have 24" laptops? lol, true I view it as a more portable computer than a laptop, though they shouldnt have a battery, who wants to lug around a 19" anyway? isnt a 17" hefty enough? lol who knows what these things may come out to be, I look forward to it!

btw, that Dell concept was really something!

Time to go to the gym!

I didn't look too closely, so maybe I missed a key concept somewhere, but the reason I didn't look too closely was because funky semi-portables like that are not a rarity at stores over here in Japan. I walk by 'em and don't think anything of them anymore...

Well saying it is too bulky to carry around it is a little short sighted. I used to carry my desktop with 21" CRT to LAN gaming parties once a week! The CRT felt like it weighed 200lbs! I am glad to be getting this laptop, and may look into replacing my desktop if this 19-21" one comes out.

w00t!!! Could this be the replacement for the venerable 8890?
Ha all you 97xx 98xx owners - ownership by a 19" laptop

Where do I sign up?
Aussie finally getting ready to give up on his 8890s? I never thought I'd see the day!
I only said "could" FriedToast - a long way from doing something.
Besides there is at least another 4 years usage out my 8890s before they are dead in the water.

8890s still rock

I WANT ONE NOW!!!!

Who cares how much it weighs?

I need to wipe the drool off my keyboard....

When You travel as much as I do through Airplanes, dealing with baggage, and etc. 17" is barely viable (I had lots of problems with my HP 17"); I wouldn't even consider a 19" laptop.

Yes if your only concern is packing it up; dropping it in your car or hiking it over to your buddies house I could see it.. But with me in the military I have weight limits, requirements, and am constantly in airplanes with my lappy. 15" and less would be optimal.. i've never had a 15.4" which I'm getting so we'll see if that's small enough not to be cumbersome.

I wouldn't buy a 21" for any reason. In that case I'd just buy a desktop for less money and more power.

This is both exciting and ridicuous.
#1, Mid-Jan of '06 has come and gone... ATI's new card releases are finally topping the 7800 which means nVidia is working on something new. AMD has announced they are no longer making socket 939 processors (not Turion, I know, but wait a tick; you'll see the point). So, there is basically a whole bunch of new and better technology in the design process, when this monster comes out, you're going to be paying high-dollar for something that is not top of the line, or won't be top of the line for more than a month or so.
#2, Maybe they'll also come out with a 44" DLP laptop with a TV tuner. Sit in an airplane or bus with a satellite dish attached to your butt... Now THAT's portable entertainment.

I just don't think this thing will be worth the money. Only hard-core notebook addicts who don't care about how much money they spend will buy one. I'd like one, just because it'd be easier to take to LAN parties than my steel-cased monster, but there's always going to be things like, "What if the screen resolution is too low" "What if it ghosts" (think about it, how many 19" LCD panels exist right now that are 8ms or better? not too awful many, and none of them are widescreen so far as I know). The screen itself could cost around $800 to put together. Add in the engineering, graphics cards, and all the extra goodies, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up at over $4000, but still has major disappointments. For that kind of money, but an aluminum case for your PC and dual X18000000XTy+3 or whatever the fastest ATI card is right now. Or, wait till nVidia puts out a Geforce 8800 or something. You'll still have to carry a mouse and keyboard with the laptop, no one is going to play any type of LAN game on a touchpad or a laptop keyboard (the keyboard might be ok, but not the mouse) and I honestly don't believe the screen will be good enough. Add in the power cable and patch cable, you may as well carry a desktop.

SLI notebook idea? I'm wiping something off my keyboard too, but it's not drool However, the fact most likely will stand that I'll never have even an urge to buy one.
I think the battery is a good idea. It acts like a UPS. There's been many times when i accidentally unplugged the power adapter from mjy laptop.

And i would get it too... but my iXPS2 is still running great.

Hey I have a small notebook to tote around on trips. I also have an Acer 1712 that weighs in at over 15lbs that I used to carry back and forth to work everyday in my leather backpack. It is all in what you are willing to put up with.

The funny thing is, some of you guys (especially if you are in the military!) are veritable he-men, and you gripe about weight. Heck, I'm a 5'3" female that weighs about 98lbs soaking wet and it doesn't bother me .

Please tell me once again how troubling it is to carry a few extra pounds....

You are missing the point. I already have 2 bags worth of stuff; sometimes three; that deal with clothes and other things to tote around and check into luggage. Some airports have a requirement/limit on the number of bags you can transport.

It has nothing to do with weight.. I can bench that 19" laptop all day and not get tired. It has to do with the bulkiness and the fact that you have to have it in it's own case cuz it doesn't hardly fit in anything else. Unless you plan on sticking it in your check in baggage and watch the Airlines toss the bag with the lappy in it 500 times and crush it by the time you get to your location.

Every time I deploy I have around 150lbs or so that is NOT related to the laptop; so getting a massively bulky laptop, A) It'll get broke, B) It's Masochistic, and C) Extremely uncomfortable for 8-12hour plane rides.
