I have an R40 and it is virtually the same except for the CPU (mine is 1.5 Pentium M vs 1.7 Pentium M), graphics chip (mine is Radeo 7500 with 32MB vs Fire GL T2 with 128MB), hard drive (60gig 5400RPM vs 60gig 7200RPM), DVD burner (mine is a CDRW), and LCD (1400 X1050 vs 1600 X 12) screen resolution. Now that I think about it, that's quite a bit of difference!
Anyhow, if price is no factor, the IBM R50p is definitely the way to go. IBM has superb build quality, unmatched keyboard, touchpad (and trackpoint), and service and support to match. From the reviews and forums I've been reading for the last 3 weeks, Dell is really slipping and continues to sell primarily based on price. For $ 3,800 bucks, you get the R50p with very little software. For the same money, you can get a Dell 8600 loaded with all kinds of software. If you really want the best, and money is no object, it's a no brainer... just ask anyone whose owned both... like me. IBM is the cream of the crop.
