DVD Editing Software?

Hi

I got about 40 football dvds of which I need to cut 10-30 sec clips from various parts of each to create 1 highlights dvd.

What software can cut snippets from a DVD???

Thanks

This is going completely from memory and it's been a while...

Most brand name software will only let you capture stills from DVDs...Hollywood copyright protection or something like that. Or it could be technical reasons...a .vob file may be constructed/compiled in such a way that it can't be edited.

I believe if you search Yahoo or Google, you'll find some homemade software that can convert the DVDs' .vob files to an .avi or .mpeg format. The programs are fairly small (20 to 30 MB), and usually cheap ($20-$30 to register...if you don't, you can only convert the first 5 or 10 minutes). After you convert it, you can use brand name editing software (I use Adobe Premiere) to clip out the highlights in .avi or .mpg format, and join them together and add your own music; and finally DVD mastering software (I use ULead's DVD Workshop) to put it all back together in DVD format. Depending on how you're going to use the DVD, be careful with the copyrighted material...

There were more (run the DVD player's video output into a video capture card) and less (use my digital camcorder to record the DVD playing back on the TV) elegant ways of doing it at the time, but I chose converting the .vob file.

Can DVDLab extract/edit video from DVDs? Or is it used to create a menu/chapter structure for putting together clips you edited in Premiere? I think DVDLab does the same thing that I use DVD Workshop to do, but it probably does it better.

I think the difficult part of the question is how to get the DVD video from the 40 DVDs into a format which Premiere can edit. Premiere won't edit .vob files.

yeh just used to create menus, tracks, etc...

premiere is teh program i use to capture... but even then youre gonna need some type of hardware.. unless you use DVD decryptor (which now new DVDs are copy right protected) and convert them to mpeg or avi, and then import them to DVDlab or

go over to doom9.com to get all the info you'd ever want about this stuff.
I've got a program called VStrip. and it is awesome for taking stuff off of dvd. ImToo DVD ripper is also a good one as it lets you preview the .vob files before you rip so you know you're getting the right ones. Each will let you save to .avi which you can then edit in Premiere. Or VirtualDub if you prefer free software.

DVDshrink to unencript the DVD

FlaskMPEG to turn the VOBs into MPEG2 files

Premiere / Vegas or whatever to edit

DVDit Pro to author the DVD, followed by TmpENC DVD authoring suite.
