HD failure rate for NP8887?

Thread Starter
I purchased an NP8887 module notebook back in 2002. At the time of purchase I had installed two drives (one in the primary location and one in one of the media bays).

About a year after purchase the primary drive for the laptop died. The laptop was still under warranty from powernotebooks so I had them RMA the drive and I new drive of the same manufacture and speed was sent. I had switched drives so that the second drive I had installed became my primary drive and the new drive was installed into the media bay.

maybe a year following the primary HD (the second original drive died) and since I was out of warranty I didn't bother replacing that drive but instead re-installed onto the second drive again (this is now 2 drive failures in 2 years).

Last night this third primary drive failed (granted this one lasted longer than the other two). I am wondering however, is this rate of failure normal? Have others seen the same rate? I have extensive PC experience but this is my first notebook. I have never had this high a failure rate with drives in a standard PC.

Is there anything that can be done to extend the life of a drive? also are there any particular manufacturers that are suggested for getting a new drive?

thanks

FWIW, I had exactly the same experience, with exactly the same machine, about two years ago (I bought it in 2003, ditched it one year later because of numerous problems, the one you described among them).

What were the drives' models?
