Was in the merchant marine in another life, but currently a senior financial healthcare analyst at a SF bay area hospital, slicing and dicing numbers (not cooking, ok). Quite a quantum leap. Unlike Tackleberry, I didn't have the good fortune of sailing on passenger liners. I sailed mostly on "tramp" cargo ships and bulk carriers. Tramp meaning that there is no scheduled destination. Most of the time you don't know where you're headed until a few days out in the ocean. The good ol' sextant was still the main navigational tool then.
