That is just great, and I am sure he will continue to make a very steady recovery....as I said before to you, and I think you know this because of what you do also, but medicine does not always have all the answers, we have quite a few but in cases like this, you just need a little higher "intervention"...and it would appear you have gotten just that...I am so very happy for you and your wife and your new son....all the things he is now doing are very positive signs, as I am sure you have been told so it is just a matter of time as he continues to improve

Things are getting even better now. He is fully awake and alert and is feeding from a bottle now. He's got the sucking, swallowing, breathing thing down. Its great to see him awake and looking around at things. We've got his crib in the NICU decked out wiht a mobile, several toys, and a big coloring book page his big bro did last night. All the docs and nurses are amazed at his progress and we are also shocked. Things keep looking up. He will be in the NICU for a few more days so they can keep an eye on him and be sure his med levels are stable.

He's only on phenobarbatol (sp?) to control the seizures and takes that by mouth now so he only has his monitors and a feeding tube in his nose. The feeding tube will come out once they see he can regularly get his whole bottle (2 oz) down by mouth.

We couldn't be happier, but now that it looks like he'll be coming home the wife and I are freaking out a little. We know the docs won't let him leave if he's not ready, but I know the first couple nights we won't sleep just to be sure he keeps breathing. He had one little episode yesterday after a physical therapy session when he stopped breathing, but started right up when the nurse rubbed his back. We chalked that up to him being tuckered out since it was the most activity he's had in his short life. Today he did even more and has gone on like a champ.

Again I can't thank you all enough for the support. We are lucky to have many people all over the world sending thoughts and prayers to us.

CancerKiller

PS Sorry to ramble on so long.

Thats wonderful news...Phenobarb is a common anti-seizure med and they will gradually reduce the dose as he is seizure "free"...there is no real hurry ....the important signs are obviously the breathing, swallowing, sucking and drinking from a bottle.....he is going to be just fine.....I am so happy for you

I'm so happy to hear this CK. Like I said the human body at early stages of development can heal itself miraculously.

I'd also like to point out how lucky Dean is to have you two as parents. I wouldn't expect anything less than your worrying about bringing him home on your own, it's a good sign you'll continue to do everything you can for Dean to make sure he's loved, and has everything he needs to thrive.

They have breathing monitors now don't they? Something that has an alarm if he stops breathing?

By the way, I have friends that had similar issues with their second baby, though there were physical issues as well. He had a tough time at first, but he's now just another normal kid getting into trouble.

You, your wife and Dean are all very lucky to have each other.

CK: This is the first I noticed the thread and while I'm new here, I'll add my hopes to those of the others. My second son was born with a ball of swiss cheese where his heart was supposed to be and at three days of age, they basically opened him up, took the cheese out and rebuilt it into a heart. And believe it or not, the only thing we see now is the damn scar! My point is, I know NICU...it's a stunning place, full of sorrow, hope, sadness and joy as the ebb and flow of events take place.

It sounds to me like you're boy is doing great and soon it's on to PICU! Which is awesome because that is where the less intensive care and monitoring takes place...

All I know is two years later, my son and I have a bond that will never be broken because for 10 days, it was just me and him and a ball of cheese! (his mom had a terrible delivery and was in a different hospital hours away..wow..it was fun!).

I'm very pleased and happy that things are going so well! Keep up the good work...years from now, you will be amazed at how strong all of this will make you!

later,
pat!

This thread really shows what is important in life. We are all tied up here in superficial material things but when you deal with something like this crisis or Hammer's sitation is really shines a spotlight on what is important.

Now back to my crazy upgrade frenzy in progress , , ,
