What do you want? Safety or (slight) performance gain?

bummer, i decided finally to go raid 1 and have it set up and realize taht i dont have a floppy drive. sucks for me

im sure there has got to be a way to get the raid drivers on a cd, i mean it is M$ who is trying to do away with floppy drives after all, you'd think they would design a way to get those raid drivers that you need to install in order to recognize the config without using a floppy drive...

you can install the raid drvers from any location, if i remember correctly.

If you want to use the raided raptors as a boot drive you will need a floppy or an OS cd with the drivers slipstreamed.

Raptors in a RAID 1 array seems an odd choice.

yeap, i'll probably go get a floppy drive later, last nite was too late for me to find one. I'd intend to do raid 0, but raid 1 to me seems more safe

IMO unless you're on a server with super-sensative data (IE: holding other peoples data, as a server does) raid 1 is a bit overkill. Ive used at least 15 drives over the last 10 years, havnt had anything fail on me yet. Currently i've got a raid 0 setup for 2x 7200 rpm drives that havnt failed in 3 years.

Unless you really plan to super-stress the drives or have un-backup-able data (like, 20 gig movies or something) raid 0 imo is the more logical choice.

For a desktop machine? RAID1 if you don't want to worry about doing backups, but that's a waste of a Raptor, IMHO.

RAID0 will double your chance of a data failure and slightly slow down your machine at the same time. Even though your read & write times can be higher in RAID0, the additional overhead on the processor can net you an overall slowdown of the system, especially if you're using software RAID. It all depends on the specific application you're trying to improve, but most apps will not be positively affected (and may be negatively affected) by RAID0.

i'd probably stripe them, then get a backup solution - no reason to waste a raptor on the backup, just get a large drive to back up the stripe.

i still rarely raid up my drives because i'm paranoid at drive failure of one.

so what should i do? raid 1 or 0
w/2 raptors raid 0 is what i should from a general concensus here.
I've 3 xternal hds to hold back up data so i'm not worry about losing data much, but i've labs and my school work in my main ones and i'm worry that i might not back up in time and lose it over freak drive failure. and that would totally suck

CPU usage is nearly 0% as long as you use a raidcard. 15 bucks will get you a PCI Raid 0/1 IDE card. Maybe 1,2% CPU usage in a bad situation? Software raid really isnt highly advisable.

Technically, yes raid 0 "doubles" your chance of drive failure. But that really puts it in the worst possible light. Drives, especially those with 5 year warentees usually don't fail too often. And as you said, you have a backup solution already. Raid 0 really is the best solution for you.

I have a small biz at home where I use quick books pro.I was thinking of doing some sort an addional backup other than the typical zip and cd drives. What do you suggest?

I guess what I'm asking is what is the most reliable?
I was thinking of getting this http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...470&pfp=BROWSE
and adding another hard drive.Your thoughts please.

guess you would want a raid 1 array then. It mirrors the first hd onto the second. You know that card only does IDE right? Just making sure your not trying to run sata drives off of it.
