Anybody got the 5205-S119? - Page 2

post #21 of 98
Yep pretty much. As far as body goes, it's the same chassis so you can't tell them apart without turning it on or seeing a label.

Btw - Did any of you guys' see Lee's review of the Fujitsu N5010? Oh man, the dilema continues. That thing looks perfect.

Kev, I haven't seen Lee's review but the Fujitsu's battery life is way too low. (I think I replied to you in another thread just now). But if you don't care on battery life, the machine sure looks nice. I can vouch for the display as I saw it this weekend and it was awesome (not sure if it's better than Toshiba's CASV or not, although the CASV has more rez).

@Kevhuynh

Big important question: do you find glare on your CASV screen? A lot of reflections of your environment? Is it annoying? Tiresome? I just read some people that complained on that and made me wonder...

Yeah there is glare when a light is either shining o it or directly above it. For the most part this isn't a problem at all.

Speaking of screens, the Fujitsu model you saw in Fry's is probably the N30XX series which is the predecessor to the new N50XX series i'm drooling over. Originally, I had assessed that the screen seemed to ghost in the spinning cube test for direct x (as this is the only 3d test I could do in store). However, I went again today and it seemed perfect. In fact the red's appeared better on the MVA screen as red's don't seem quite as saturated on the S119's screen. Let me know if it was the N50XX series you got your hands on Rais3d as the overall feel of the N30XX book that I played with today was VERY nice.

No, I already ordered the S119 so no Fuji for me. I can't get that Fuji because even though it looks nice, it's even bigger than the S119 (16'') with less resolution (1400x1050) - but those are not the deal breaker for me. It's the battery life: "up to 2 hours" and that's running the P4 1/2 speed (according to their own footnote in the specs). This machine probably achieves more of a 1 hour to 1 hour and 20 minute battery life in not so super long mode.

My 5105-S701 has a battery life like that (because the battery Toshiba put in is wimpy as this uses a P4-M), and this is the thing that started me on the quest for a new machine as I am sick of such a short battery life.

That being said, if you like the Fujitsu and don't care on battery life, it looks nice indeed. I would definitively get that over the GateWAy 505mx due to the display and it will be faster than the gateway anyway because it uses an HT P4 @ 2.8Ghz. But that's if I didn't care about battery life.

Heh,

I actually priced it out on Fujitsu earlier today and it's starting to creep up ini price when I throw in wireless, an aftermarket stick of pc2700, and a 60 gig hard drive.

That said, you won't be disappointed with the S119 as from what I gathered from your responses this laptop seems to have the best combination of features for you Rais3d.

Thanks Kevhuynh.. at this point I am semi-worried on glare but other than that, it kind of makes sense. I bought the 5105-S701 because of the combination of features it has and it can only make sense that the 5205-S119 being a 2-generation successor to the same line will fullfill the same needs.

The only new need that has grown with me over time a bit is I wish the machine was a bit smaller, so maybe airplane use is doable, but it's not really a biggie requirement for me. If Toshiba did say a "52xx" series alike in 1400x1050, nice display, smaller, Pentium M, Hitachi 7200 rpm that would be really nice :-)

I defnitively still can and do make use of 1600x1200 though..... for digital photography, and when you have one and only machine it's good. When you think about it, the fact that good LCD displays alone are pricey, you could even view a purchase like this as getting a nice monitor :-)

According to Toshiba and now FedEX the machine should be here tomorrow by 3:00pm. I won't have much time to play with it tomorrow so impressions will have to wait for Friday night, probably. I also need to make sure I move all my data/apps out of this 5105-S701 and get it ready once I do that for sale at eBay.

Just to throw in my two cents, I played a LOTR Extended DVD on my latop and with screen brightness full, stuff still runnin in the background on normal mode (not battery optimized) I got through the whole thing and still had 17% battery life.

Mind you again this is with a pretty much wasted primary battery.

That's not bad at all. You say your main battery is wasted.. how much are you getting out of it now, and back then when it was new?

@Interfire:

One more question: I just saw that the main battery on the S119 takes 2.9 hours to charge w/ computer off and the 2nd battery 2.5 hours to charge with the computer off. Is this sequential or in parallel? i.e. how long does it take to charge both? 2.9 + 2.5 = 5.4 hours or it takes 2.9 hours (full charge on both by then)?

Thanks!

Just to clarify a few things
The N5010 Series laptop by Fujitsu is out and whatever problems came with the N3 seem to be channeled out.
If you were amazed at the 15" MVA screen, the 16" Crystal View screen will whipe out your mind. I'm still awaiting the exact response time, But from what has been known, It boasts a 600:1 ratio
Not to mention it looks excellent!

Yeah, this was the laptop I was just recently considering but that weight...WHOA! Although I want power and a ncie screen, I still want to carry my laptop to work everyday as I do with the S119 I have right now. There is no way in HELL I'm carrying that to work.

@jmkay03 -

I just can't abide by the battery life. Size annoys me but not to the point of disqualifying.. but the battery life...

I agree it looks like a nice machine.

BTW, my Toshiba was due today but FeDex didn't find an apartment number on the address, and when they looked at the names directory my name apparently was not listed out by our landord. Joy.

I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

It takes about 4 hours to fully charge mine when they are drained completely. Thats with the notebook off of course. The notebook will charge the primary battery first, and then the secondary afterwards.

I am probably getting I would say 65% or so from my primary battery compared to what I used to. Make sure to take care of the batteries and they'll do good for ya.

Is it true that Lithium Ion batteries in general (latpops, digital cameras) need a first charge "burn in" of like 10-18 hours?

- Raist
post #36 of 98
Well when they are new, you should charge them fully and drain them completely a couple times to get them conditioned. After that it's best to keep them topped off.

But you still should fully drain them everynow and then like a couple of times a month, but depending how how much you use it.

Ok, finally got the machine!

First impressions: wow, Toshiba's class.

The cpad is different in color from the S5105 I have - it is a green glow now. Also the special cPad functionality respond much better to button presses by fingers.. it's like they tweaked them a bit or have more space to respond better.

Biggest surprise: Sound- the subwoofer re-location really makes a difference.

CASV display - it's darn nice but the new Fujitsu 5010 probably has a better one due to contrast. I have to say though, there's some glare. The glare is like the one you would get on a "coated with antiglare" good CRT... I can see where this could be annoying in some places...

What I was looking for: battery life: YAY! Finally. 4-5 hours.

I will do the "Lord of the Rings: Stress Test" sometime in the lowest setting.

Gotta catch some sleep... laterz.

AWESOME!

I'm now 100% satisfied with my laptop as well. After doing more research on the alternatives, the S119 is the best combination of power, weight, battery life and price. Throw in the GORGEOUS screen and fabulous sound and this laptop is a winner .

Did you both get the S119 directly from Toshiba? Thanks for all your help so far, I'm really liking what I hear!
