Anybody got the 5205-S119? - Page 4

2nd bay battery

also, doesn't the sager have a second bay so that you can use the main battery + 2nd battery + cdrw/dvd or main battery + 2nd battery + 3rd battery? anyone know what the bay battery options are and how much they cost and more importantly how much battery life they add?
At best a second battery will give it 2.5 hours of battery life on a 4080. That's roughly what the Toshiba gets on it's single battery. A second battery can be added to the Toshiba as well which accoreding to Raised who bought one increases battery life by about 66%. You're talking about 4 hours + of playback on a DVD.

Austion - Be VERY aware of ebayers that use Western Union. My co-worker got ripped off by one. I don't know ifyour potential deal is from ebay or not but if so, check the seller's feed back. Accounts sometimes get hijacked on ebay so just taking a quick glance at the percentage of positives isn't good enough. If a seller has only been selling 1-2 dollar trinkets and all of a sudden is selling a 2 thousand dollar BRAND NEW piece of hardware I'd be leery. Remember -- BUYER BEWARE!

+ Battery life (above all)
+ I trust more Toshiba as a brand than Sager, although the excellent Bizrate ratings of PCTorque are very encouraging
+ Overall "multimedia aspect" of it - no subwoofer (I bet the s119 sounds better), the LCD display of the S119 seems overall better to me (hmm I see it sez now that I read it has a glossy display so maybe the displays are not that different). Except fort the display, this is for me kinda minor.
+ Toshibas "no fault" + express depot warranty

No. The 4080 doesn't have a 2nd battery bay.

To be fair and accurate, I was able to play about 3 hours, 35 minutes of DVD in "low power mode" but with a display setting of 1/2 brightness + 1 notch up. This is actually not bad at all. If I had dimmed the display I think the machine would have gotten past all the credits in Lord Of The Rings: Two Towers, extended edition.

Rais3d - How are you cleaning your lcd? Some overexuberant coworker left fingerprints all over the lcd. A moist towel doesn't seem to do the trick.

Haven't tried anything in particular but I think a normal monitor-cleaning solution/cloth would do the trick.

I would use one of those, but NOT normal alcohol.

Has anyone tried installing Linux (any distro) over 5205-S119 ? Any known problems to be aware of while working with Linux and S119 ?

@decent

*I THINK* that Toshiba now supports Linux but I dunno. Best bet is to call them or check their tech support website (www.toshiba.com, then notebooks, from there support or such).

Anybody know if the machine will run FS 2004 or Madden 2004 without a glitch.

Im thinking of buying this tOSHIBA as welll .The price was around 1492 delivered but I can get a loaded Dell (1.7 PM Radeon 9600 128mb 4xDVD+R 512 333mhz ram 6200 rpm 60 mb HD)for only $600 more. Seems if you're gonna already spend $1500...another $600 for the top spec is worth it. Especially for a notebook ya can't upgrade...Hmmmm

If theTosh can run FS 2004 though, that is pretty much all I need to know. I really don't need the DVD burner and the difference between the 7200 and 5400 Rpm drives is not really that noticable. It all comes down to the graphics 3D card and the processor.

Battery life is nice but Im never on Batts more than an hour anyway.

Nice to hear you guys love this machine though. The FUJITSU is over priced and is crippled with low speed memory and a slow hard drive anyway...too bad.
You say "only" 600 more. That's almost 50% more. To me that's a lot of money. Then again, if money isn't an issue then go for it. No wait I take that back...that's a BIG difference no matter who you're asking...50% more is 50% more. A huge draw to the Toshiba was/is the price tag.

In regards to the Fujitsu laptop, you're paying for one helluva a screen. As good as the CASV and the Xbrite screens are...belive me they're right at the top, the new line of MVA screens are better. Sorry, the Dell WUXGA is one heck of an lcd, but make no mistake, it's not on par with the new line of LCD's that are out.

That said if you are concerned purely about performance and battery life and money is no issue...I'd go for the Fujitsu and swap in your own hard drive and ebay the one it came with.

I would like to know what Dell you are talking about because a Pentium M 1.7 Ghz with a 1600x1200 display and the Hitachi hardisk is more than $600.

With just WSXGA+ display (less area than the Toshiba but not bad), it's $2,454 USD (that's with 1 year warranty). Let's spend $19 USD more on the Toshiba to match the RAM and we get:

$2,454 USD - $1350 - $19 = $1085 USD more than the Toshiba. The display is not as nice (I have seen it in person), and Dell lately quite frankly has questionable quality and really poor customer service (at the home level, not the $corporate accounts$ level). Check out what users have to say about Dell in CNET, and check out the revies on PC magazine on the yearly consumer report.

The sound while not as bad as I expected is sup-par compared to the Toshiba (if you care about that kind of thing).

I was thinking about buying Dell but the reviews by people who have them and the real bad customer support (doesn't help a bad experience I had with them when buying a digital camera) makes me hesitate recommending this machine.

Hi,

I would like to know how much time (at maximum - jusr MSWord use for example) can the 5205-s119 survive with the 2nd battery? Can it reach 6 hours? I mean, no intensive operations (the cooler must remain off most of the time).

thanks

Guich,

In normal mode it is up to 5 hours, not 6. That's using slower long modes I think. Otherwise it's about 4 hours.

Real life tested- 3 hours, 35 minutes playing DVD's in power save mode (plays them fine without skipping a frame), and brightness at 1/2 the screen + 1 more notch up.

Dell 1.7 15.4 UXGA
Radeon 128 9600 pro
DVD +R burner
Wifi
60 MB 7200 RPM drive
512 333mz Ram

$2305
-$200 coupon/special
$150 rebate

Theres the $600. My idea was if you are already going to spend $1500 you can get SOOO much more for a relativly small amount of money. and you can get WAY more of a machine. YOu have to live with a notebook a LONG time. No upgrading like desktops. I just think it's better to spend the money and get the nuts, unless you are budgeted for a $1200 machine. You don't even need to get the DVD burner or the 1.7 for that matter and save another $350! Thats my problem with the Toshiba. SLOW HD SLOW RAM. It;s all about the screen. I love Toshiba but Compaq and HP have much better deals. with the 9600 Radeon and 128 Nvidia cards as well. I had a Toshiba Sattelitte and it was a GREAT machine. Trouble free for 5 years. Still have it. But I beleiev all machines are pretty good and will be trouble free in general so why not get the best components for even

Be warned, you will find this is not the case. I agree with the rest except....

Ok, where exactly is this Dell? I can't find an Inspiron (USA site) that has the UXGA and not the widescreen that is the 8600 line... any links?

I just checked at Dell and it will be about a $1k difference (that's taking into account 512 megs DIMM extra for the Toshiba and the no fault express depot warranty and tax in the Toshiba. It's actually more difference in $$ if you take the extra warranty + 256 megs extra ram).

Hi guys, sorry to write about a different topic but could some of you who ever shopped at shoptoshiba.com tell me how long it took their credit card to be verified by Toshiba? I finally ordered an s119 two days ago using american express card but the status is still "pending for credit card verification", so I just wonder if there could be any problem.

Thanks for your replies.

It took me about 2-3 days... so your machine should be ok soon.

BTW, I think you are in the UK.. did you order from there to the US site or the UK site?
