ok guys.....just got some HOT apple info on the macbook 64bit

Thread Starter
Just talked with a guy in IT at my campus and his dad works for Apple. He said that the 64bit MacBook will be released this summer (July 06). The only thing holding it back is Intel releasing the chip codenamed Merom.

The revised Apple will be:

MacBook Pro (maybe Elite)
avail in 17, 15.4 & 12?
OS X 10.5
intel core duo (merom) 4mb L2 cache & EM64T
no word on firewire 800 yet.....
8x DVDRW DL & possibly lightscribe

he said it will include multiple screen options for the 15.4 and the 17 inch models. i dont know if this means resolution or if it means we can get it in glossy.....damn it would b beautiful in glossy!

So if you guys can wait........I reccomend it.

OS 10.5 won't be out until this winter.

Merom will be out in september (I think). Dunno if apple has first dibs on the merom proc(they might get it june or something). I wish so I can get one this july(or august).

I dont see how this will be out july considering they announced a few days ago merom will be out september.

Regarding the Merom CPU update and additional features/options for the MacBook, that's a more or less expected scenario. The 15.4" Yonah MacBook seems to be only an intermediary solution until the real MacBook line can be released later on in the year...

However, July seems to be an unrealistic release date as others have pointed out. Possibly that could be the date when they officially announce the new models, but I doubt one will be able to actually buy one by then...

I love how it's always "I talk to a friend of a friend of a friend's uncles brother's cousin's mother who works with someone who's friend's friend's friend's ex boyfriend's father's sister's niece was standing 100 feet away from Steve Jobs in a crowded room with lots of noise and she heard they're coming out with THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREADâ„¢!"

I think you have got it right. I would bet that apple finished the 32-bit port of OSX and is working on the 64-bit port. That would mean that we could see the replacement for the G5 at mid-year. A 64-bit lappy would be an option, but I bet the MacBookPro will still be selling like hotcakes.

Ummm. Intel's roadmap has the Merom update to the Yonah chip arriving end of the year. It will have a 4MB cache, lower power usage, 64bit, and some other improvements.

Obviously Apple will update systems whenever Intel releases a new processor platform, just like every other PC manufacturer . Apple becoming just another re-badger of Chinese computers using Intel platforms kinda takes the mystery out of "new mac rumors".

WTF? Apple computers are completely original designs by Apple themselves. Chinese companies might put the damn things together but they aren't re-badged. There will always be great new things for Apple to announce, even now that the new computers use pretty standard Intel chipsets.

Design process for Apple:

1. Design computer and create prototypes in house.

2. Allow companies to build this design to Apple's exact specification using only apple approved parts.

Process for PC makers:

1. Decide they need a new notebook

2. Requestion ODMs to submit their machines for bidding

3. Add minor modifications to said design in order to distinguish it from other notebooks based on that design.

Well if the PowerBook's revision history (available at http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ for anyone interested) is any indicator then the next MacBook revision should be out around September. All of this is speculative of course as one needs to take into account the fact that April 1st of this year is Apple's 30th anniversary. If I was a betting man I'd expect to see some hot product released then.
