In an alternate development in cool N quiet sony laptops, heres food for thought...

As the three centrinos so far all use the same slots (banias, dothan and sonoma) I borrowed the dothan from a friends dell 8600 (a 1.83 dothan, 400mhz fsb) and put it in my sony.

Needless to say, it worked! Im currently typing on it now as we speak, I wont get the chance to run extensive tests on say, battery life, but I can say it definately runs considerably cooler.

It booted absolutely fine without a hitch. I am running centrino hardware control with the cpu at 0.7 volts (at 600 mhz). I ran half life 2 for a while, it got up to 64 degrees celcius. I let it come back down to idle temp, and its quite nicely at 44 / 45 instead of 46 / 47. Ok not what you call a massive difference, but nonetheless, the machine is absolutely quiet.

As I say, this is with a dothan. Maybe there may be better results with an old banias chip...

so whats in our machines? a sonoma?

your fsb is at 400MHz? i thought it was at 166Mhz or something like that?

You took your proc out of your laptop!! did you apply as5 to your core?

The sonoma, as I have found out, is the chipset. We are still running Dothan processors, but at 533Mhz fsb now.

The FSB would have been running slower, due to running the older 400MHz FSB dothan from my friends dell. The ram was still 533MHz ram, just underclocked a bit.

Certainly did! Its easy. I did put a little arctic silver (well, another brand of) to the core, its quite easy to do.

In addition, my friend ran my 2gig cpu in his dell, his software was showing temperatures of about 39 / 40 degrees for the cpu. I think in the end, our computers are naturally hotter because there is no space for air to circulate on the case. The keyboard is practically sitting on the heatsink above the cpu in the sony!

I actually don't anticipate that the results from using an older banias chip will do much more, given the space constraint in the sony.

Don't worry guys, not forgotten about you.

My friend in Sweden has just had a really busy week with work.

I emailed him and he said that he'll try to get around to it ASAP.

I'll post it as soon as I get it.

You Know What?

just use a cooling pad, it will solve your problem; get it for less then 20 bucks and mine's temperature is around 40 degrees with no fan noise. what a simple solution.
