This thing has all the following roles:
-Home entertainment center: I don't watch a lot of TV, but I do like to watch movies, and play music loudly while I'm drawing or building something.
-Work computer: I am an artist for a computer game developer, and this is one of the very few laptops that could support BOTH my need for 1600x1200 resolution AND an upgradeable graphics solution. I use all the following in my daily work, and many of them are run simultaneously..
1. 3DStudioMAX 6
2. Painter 7
3. Photoshop 8
4. ACDSee (multiformat viewer)
5. Visual Studio SourceSafe 6
We also work 100-hours or more per week during our crunch-mode, so this thing has given me the ability to get out of my stuffy office for a few hours while I go work at a coffeeshop or even just to have a smoke outside. It's really great.
-Heavy, long-term Gaming: Not only do I play for entertainment, but also to test the artwork I've made inside the intensely high-polygon game engine.
-Research: I do a lot of investigating into art, literature, science, philosophy, etc... All the things that make artists capable of working within the intensely technical workspace of computer games, I guess. With the wireless connection in my house, I can lug this thing around into bed, or into the kitchen if I'm still too curious to put it down while I bake a lasagna or something. Information junkie, I am.
-Portfolio: A hell of a lot better to show prospective employers your entire catalog of work, with the ability to drag out the ideas and images you've created and manipulated for the last 10 years, without rummaging through a huge binder to get it.
-Portable art studio: Flop out the laptop, drop down my 6x8 wacom tablet, and it's an instant painting studio / sketchbook. Awesome.
