Cut down Windows!

Here's two pictures to show how much space can be saved in \Windows directory..

1) Delete $*.* update directories & files (can be seen in first picture) Around 150MB after SP2 and 35 critical updates!
2) Delete previous SP2 files $Servicepackfiles directory (if you've updated to a Service Pack and not slipstreamed disc)
3) Delete Servicepackfiles directory (version of files already in other directory) I would make a copy onto a CD-R or another mass storage drive in case you need the files. Windows will need these files if you remove/add hardware or software. But when everything is up and running can be moved to another drive.
4) Uninstall things like MSN and Games from Windows add/remove
5) Uninstall Messenger via XP Anti-Spy
6) Use XP Lite to remove unwanted features (tour, help, search assistant, etc)
7) Delete System Restore backup.

1GB saving! As usual done at your own risk so don't blame me if you borf windows ;-)

seems hardly worth it for one gig of space, or 1.25% of my entire hard drive....

Thanks for the tip. I need all the space I can get. Right now I got 6 GB free on my 2 HDs (320 GB total space).

I think I'm gonna invest in a new HD soon...

mr. roboto, even if I had your desktop rig HD setup I would still do it, basically just tidies it up, and you can also remove unwanted services also. DL XP Lite and scroll down the sections to see (trial doesn't do anything anyway)

It's just that Windows is bloatware, so why let it get away with it? :-) It has Windows tours, search assisant (doggie), Accessability, Netmeeting, MS Messenger, Speech, Indexing, etc that most people will never use.

Oh I would also disable unnecessary services (increased from 250MB to 300MB free)

Again if your computer fails to boot don't blame me! Don't disable workstation!

well, i wouldnt call alot of those things bloat, they have absalotley no effect on system performance in the slightest, only the ones like messanger that boot when windows loads. Beleive be, im a process nazi, i hate having unneccicary processes and services loading. You can stop anything from loading without removing it. The only problem with absalotley removing 1 gig of windows stuff is the risk is way too high. Sure, right now, you're fine, but down the road when you want to add a component to windows, or when a program needs to reference a file you deleted, your sol. And to those who do it to free up space, surley theres something else you can delete, maybe start with that gian pr0n collection? lol, j/k

My solution: Burn unused data to DVDs.
