External DVD burner for ibook: compatibility/capability

Hi all,

I have an ibook G4 and am considering buying an external DVD burner. I understand the LaCie burners come with Mac software and are one of the recommended brands.

Does anyone have experience using a LaCie external drive with a new ibook and iDVD5? (I'm looking at the relatively new but affordable 16x DVD+\-RW DL Firewire Porsche Drive (300987U), if that matters.) Any problems I should be aware of?

Also, can I use a LaCie dual-layer burner to burn/backup commercial DVDs I already own, or will I run into copy protection issues? What software will I need to get around the copy protection? (Don't worry, this is solely for my own use.) When I searched for information on the Internet, I got conflicting reports ... seems dual-layer capacity eases commercial DVD copying?

Much thanks!

hmm, if the dvd is at or under 8.5GB u may be able to copy it from device to device like u can w/ CDs. i haven't tried it w/ a CD (or a DVD ever) in a while, so i'm not sure how or if different copy protections would be in place w/ trying to make a direct copy. for simply ripping DVDs (as well as removing the copy protection) to a hard drive the only issue should be at the software level, it won't be dependent on the DVD drive you are using. check macupdate or versiontracker for dvd ripping software. i've heard mactheripper is widely used. as i do all of my DVD backups on my desktop i can't tell u my experiences with the mac software.

also, if the lacie drive isn't natively supported by the OS u can most likely use patchburn (macupdate or versiontracker) to get it recognized.
