What do you think of the new T60 look?

First, the keyboard sports two additional Windows keys and adds multimedia lablels to existing keys, making the the Ctrl and Alt keys, which are used much more frequently than the Windows keys, smaller and croweded. With all these changes, Lenovo didn't address the major nagging point of most Thinkpad users, which is swapping the Fn and Ctrl keys.

Second, the trackpoint buttons lost their red and blue strips and their curves and became small, square, and all black. Same thing happened to the touchpad buttons. They became small and lost their curves.

Third, the volume and on/off buttons look now like Aspirin pills.

What do you guys think of these changes? Do you think the new look makes the Thinkpad T60 series sleeker, classier, and more functional than the T42/T43 series or downright bland, cheesy, and awkward?

Would you mind posting a link with you posts please ?

Without googling it because Im lazy, I can say I will probably not be looking at the T60 come time I need a new lappy or something. Windows keys on the IBM are like water and oil on hottop. Okay, slight exageration but I can bet that's one small feature which attracts *X users. The Ctrl-Fn snafu, believe it or not, because I didn't either, is actually something you can train yourself to get over.. easily. I don't like what Im hearing about the trackpoint, it's my main tool as I like being centered and attached to the keyboard for quick maneuvering. Feel free to post pics too, this forum is very friendly.

Here are some shots of the T43 for comparison. I really hate the Aspirin pills and the crowded keys on the T60. I don't know what the folks at Lenovo were smoking when they made those fugly changes.

It looks like they copied the trackpoint buttons and trackpad buttons from the Z series which I think is cheap. I took a close up look at a Z60t at Office Depot and I thought the whole thing was cheap. Now it looks like they are duplicating these cheap components on the T60 - their flagship product. I think we're seeing the very, early, early stages of making the Thinkpad, even the high end, cheaper and more appealing to the "consumer" and not the "professional".

I wish someone like Samsung would make a really high end laptop with excellent components and great ergonomics - I'd spend the money without hesitation. Any others?

Rumor has it that Samsung has a non-compete clause with Dell because of their ODM relationship. So no Samsung laptops in the US. Too bad, too. The Samsung x50 (and now x60) look like really great machines. I can't offer direct comparisons to the IBM T series (due to lack of 1st hand experience) but they would be close competitors, I think.

I actually don't think the changes are bad. Sure, the old Access IBM/volume keys looked better, but I am glad they added Windows keys, and I don't think the look suffers from the new UltraNav layout. That WAN antenna does look stupid, though, and the laptop looks a bit thicker than my T43p.

All I can say is thank god I a T43 instead of waiting for the T60. That thing just does not seem nearly as good I think my next laptop will be an Apple once they get the Intel transition a little more under their belt. Come on Lenovo... stick with what worked in the past!

The worst change are those new as you put it "aspirin buttons", I saw them on the Z60t at Office Depot and they look terrible, cheap and off color. I'm also disappointed that they removed the red line from the track pad buttons, it's a small thing but the red gave it a better look, now it just looks like a black brick with weird buttons.

I agree fully with you. I think that Lenovo almost has to do this. Keep in mind that IBM had not been profitable with the Thinkpad line for several years before the sale.

the red definitely made the laptop stand out alot. I hate the square touch pad buttons. I love my T43. and if reliable though I am sure I can get used to the keyboard. But all black now it does look kind of cheap and plain.

Yeah! The Z series design is a wrong move, very far away from the classy Sapper's and Yamato's models. May be the new developing team subvalorated the little things that made us fall in love with this beautyes, a blue dot here, a little green light over there, a red strip, some greyish keys, all that was there for a reason, and the result was a very balanced object which combined design, construction quality, functionality and perfomance, with a reasonable price... very near I am afraid from it's production cost (maybe the reason it wasn't an attractive business for IBM)

However... and on the other hand I see Lenovo is trying to do their best, the quality isn't so bad, it is near its IBM predecessors, remember that IBM still keeps its 13% share in Lenovo, let's hope the development executives of both parties listen to the voice of its loyal costumers (us....) and redirect it's design strategies, ... contract Sapper again, invite him to travel to the Great Wall and get some drawings done!... ( It was a joke ), seriously! ... Bring back Sapper and thinks will be nice again...

I completely agree with all the negative comments about the Z and the comparisons made with the T series... I can't believe they're going in this direction with the Z's... they're horrible.

The keyboard is the number one feature of IBM notebooks.. you can pound away and they're rugged. Not to mention the other features of the notebooks' durability. The reason for their sale loss was because IBM wasn't listening to the larger gaming market. They weren't keeping up with graphics features found in other machines.. and not keeping up with larger and faster harddrives.

Keep the older keyboard, upgrade system performance. sheesh

Personally, I can do without the windows...but some people like them, which is why they have been added to the keyboard. It's the same reason IBM added the touch pad to ThinkPads...broaden the appeal.

The white volume buttons are nothing more than accents. They are neither here-nor-there to me.

As for the color removed from the trackpoint keys...who looks at their trackpoint keys? I do everything by touch. So as long as the keyboard continues to feel great, I don't care what color they are...within reaon of course.

I will tell you one thing though. When i need to get another lappy for business. if the keybaord on thenew models turns out to be lousy and not on par with my t43 than i will probably opt for an apple (i hope i can get rid of the operating system if i have too). The reason people who love ibm have been with the company is quality so believe me that we will know the difference.

Yeah, quality is the reason i have/had so many thinkpads. I dont mind paying extra for something that can take a punch.

I have a T60 coming in 2 weeks, that will help me determine if i stay with Thinkpads or i bail and move to Fugitsu. Personally, i would rather give my money to Japan than China.

Do me a favor. Can you please let us (me) know what you think about the new machines. Its nice to find someone who has been with the company for so long that their input is very valuable. The last thinkpad i bought was the t43p so im out of the loop for almost a year.
