Guys, I was just wondering how many of you leave your laptop on standby, hiberbate, or shut it down. This would really help me, since I dl big files and work 10- 12 hours a day. For desktop I rarely shut it off and kept it on dling for days. I know a notebook is somewhat different so would leaving it on standy or hiberbate damage the notebook?. Maybe decrease its life span? I usually leave my notebook on dl/upload for 12 hours and im unsure of the risk if I keep leaving it on. So plz vote to help me decide wether standby, hibernate, or shutdown.

It totally depends on the situation...I leave it on, standby or turn it off depending on how long I will be away from it and what it is doing. I have left it on overnight many times and don't worry too much about it. I usually don't like to leave it on for hours when I am not in the same room, however.

When I go to class I usually put it in standby so it starts up faster when I get back. If I am going to be out all day I just turn it off. Big downloads are accomplished overnight or when I am not using the intraw3b.

Leaving a computer on for long periods of time causes wear on the system, but so does normal turn on in the morning/off at night usage. I think as long as you keep your system cool with minimal tasks running on a constant basis, you should be just fine.

I have heard that notebook hardware shows signs of wear earlier than a desktop would...Because of this I feel better about leaving a desktop on for long periods of time compared to a notebook.

I agree with nyako.
I tend to be on about 3-5 times throughout the day, so I leave it in Standby.
Hibernation takes some disk space, but usually these days it's rare that that is such a concern.
But Hibernate does take considerably longer to wake up from than Standby.
From what I've read, Hibernate writes everything to hard disk and then powers down. Standby just reduces power-down to the CPU and RAM, where it keeps the info poised & ready to spring into action.
So over a few days, Standby will suck your battery dry.

standby will suck the battery dry? even if its plug in?

No, obviously not if it's plugged in.

Vote was "Shutdown" but "it depends..."

Mostly just leave it on 24/7 occasionally use Stand-By to save time on a move and will be on again in a few hours.

Rarely use Hibernate as some of my software does not like it.

Clean shutdown is least risk and 'clears the system' best.

But I usually don’t use stand-by either.

this is my drill on things:

overnight i standby, or hibernate, depends on what i feel like.

during the day i either just leave it if i am at home, or standby if i am going away for a few hours

i'll shut it down usually when i am in school. like i'll un-standby it in the morning, use it for a few minutes, and then shut it down till i come back home in the afternoon

but thats in windows....

in linux, thanks to crappy ati drivers which don't allow for standy nor hibernate, my options are shut down, or keep it on (unless i change the video drivers from fglrx to ati), in which case i usually shut it down if i am gone for more than an hour or so.

I turn mine off at night. I got into the habbit when I use to have my desktop in my room and it was loud and I am not the deepest sleeper so I would turn it off.
Once it is on, it stays on for the day and I may stand by if I know ill be away for extended periods of time and I shut it down at night. I dont think its a big issue though.

Standby is my friend. I tend to be using the computer on and off during the day, so it's on standby most of the time I'm not using it, and I shut it off at night. But if you're downloading huge files like you mentioned, then it won't hurt the notebook, as long as it has adequate ventilation.

I shut my PC down every day for night.

Hibernate's mine. I like how I can quickly boot up from hibernate and do a complete shutdown. However, the pc does get sluggish if you keep on hibernating without a full restart once in a while.

I hibernate every night. I restart once in a while, to keep things fresh. I also defragment frequently.

Ok we got a lot of mix feeling here. So here is the tough one, If your downloading a big that need 2-4 days for it to be finish will you leave it on 2-4 days?. If you standby/hibernate the download will be disconnected. But you really want that file and wanted ASAP without resuming it on after you shut your notebook off. So can't shutdown/standby/hiberbate but to leave it on 2-4 days to complete that file. How will it effect the notebook? shorter life span? Internal overheating ( though I think I got a pretty good cooling system), overall whats the risk , and should i continue doing this?

As long as the notebook has adequate ventilation, it should be fine. Check the temps periodically if you're worried about overheating. I wouldn't think you'd have any problems from doing that.

For whatever reason, I can rarely get my notebooks with 2gb ram to hibernate. More times than not, it will return with "Insufficient resources to complete the API"

Standby is great if your notebook supports it well. I have had some notebooks that could not survive the night on StandBy on a full battery without draining the battery completely (Sager, Sony) and I've had other notebooks that could go a whole weekend and fully drain the batter (Dell, Compaq)

I hate completely shutting down my notebook. I usually have a mix of several work programs and websites I'm reading up, and I like to keep them that way. I see not too much problem with leaving a notebook on for extended periods. I do it all the time. Ripping, I mean backing up, movies or downloading images, etc.
