Ferrari 3000 - Page 6

I am upgrading my RAM to 1GB (2x512), but the back panel allows access to only one module. How do I get to the other one? Do I have to open the whole laptop?

You don't need the function key to press F2, it's at the top of your keyboard, near the ESC key.

If it's not too late I suggest you try this first. If it is, I guess the FN key could have been broken anyway =P

Wow I'm really sorry for your troubles, I guess I was lucky =D.

Yep... and I tried to open it before, but after taking all the screws out it appeared something else was still holding it together. I emailed Acer tech support and I think they said I would void my warrantee if I opened it myself, and basically refused to tell me how. =(

They said to take it to an Acer center or something like that... give them a call.

It sounds like a scam. I ordered 2 512 sodimms from crucial and I would have to go to an acer center to install them. I'm beginning to think they will only install dimms that you bought from acer.

Give 'em a call and clarify... They better NOT be trying to scam us!
Personally, I wouldn't even care about the warantee being voided, it's just that I can't figure out how to get it open.

You can force the speed of the CPU to always be 1.86GHz with a tool called SpeedSwitchXP

http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/index.html

Any one has solved the problem of the Front Side Bus Speed (is supposed to be 333Mhz but is fixed at 266Mhz).

It makes no sense to have memory supporting 333Mhz if the BUS is at 266Mhz!

SoDimm ram slots

HI StormX02, the ONLY function key that works is the F1 key which when pressed goes to XP help pages, i've tried everything else to get it to go into BIOS but no luck, F2-F12 do nothing also pressing FUNCTION F1-F12 does nothing, think i might ask for a refund and get an Alien (O:

WHUGSTER....i updated ram to 768, the instructions i got from an ACER engineer, there is one slot on the underside of the FERRARI and 'APPARENTLY' the other slot is located 'CONVENIENTLY' underneath the Ferrari's keyboard, which is supposed to negate the need to take the notebook to bits, the keyboard un-hinges giving access to the other ram slot..

Found this on the net and it talks about the Travelmate 800, which is very similar to the Ferrari:

Ok, the second ram slot is under the keyboard, but it's not as tough to get to as past models may have been. You'll notice a little round doohicky between the F12 and the prtsc key. There are two others between F4-F5 and ESC F1. Take a paperclip, straighten one side of it, and put that side in the doohicky. pull down towards the front of the computer. Each will slide a couple of mm's and click. Flip the computer over, and tere's a screw in the middle of the computer labled "KB". Remove it.

You can now lift the keyboard out of the computer by pulling up on the Function row. Carefully lift it up and rotate it towards the touchpad. There is a ribbon cable attaching it to the computer. Now very carefully pry out the extremely poorly designed cost-saving clip that retains the ribbon cable to the computer. I can't believe Acer used this rather than the typical "cam'd" locking clip. Once you remove that, hopefully in one piece, you're home free.

The memory slot is under the metal cover you're now looking at. Remove the 6 or 7 screws that retain it, and slide it towards the screen and up and out. Ta-da! you're set.

Don't be afraid of the ribbon cable. The only thing you need to make sure of is that the cable isn't backwards, but it'll be obvious which way it goes back in. You just press it back in and put the clip over it to retain it. After putting the metal cover/framwork back in place, the keyboard will click back into place by pushing on the left and right sides. Flip the computer over and re-install the KB screw, and you're done

Holy **** that is pretty messed up...

Okay yeah if you've been having this much bad luck with it I really do suggest you look around for something else, nothing's worth this lol

What round doohicky?!

And hey did you manage to upgrade? Any percievable difference in performance?

Ferrari vs. Travelmate 800LCi

I received my Ferrari yesterday. Here is how it addresses my concerns with the Travelmate 800LCi I returned:
- Extremely loud DVD/CDRW drive: The new DVD+/-RW is extermely quiet by comparison . This was probably achieved by making the drive non-modular. And the little section just under the drive feels a little flimsy.
- Loud/long fan: The fan volume is also extremely quiet by comparison . But it seems to be on nearly continously, even when the CPU speed is decreased to 909Mhz.
- Only one memory module is easily accessible - . Same issue (see previous posts).
- Poor style. I got this delivered to my office and every person walking by my cube had to stop ! I'm going to have to start waxing it daily.
- Creaking on the lower right-hand side. The finish feels a lot more polished and this issue is resolved .
- Average wireless reception. The new g wifi-card gets Excellent reception .
- As expected, the battery life is quite poor with a max of 2 hours.

I love the display, even though it came with one **** dead pixel.
So I have 2 weeks to decide if I want to keep it or get an IBM Thinkpad T41 or R50 instead. These wouldn't have all the sexy components (bluetooth, DVD+-RW) but I'd expect them to be more durable. Some co-workers have the T41 so I'll be able to compare the smaller screen.

BTW, cnet now has a full review of the Ferrari (http://reviews.cnet.com/Acer_Ferrari...-30615345.html).

I can't find this doohickey either. Although I think you have to remove first the platic panel that houses the round launcher button to get access to that screw that releases the keyboard. I want to be very careful so I haven't tried anything yet.

Was that the only documentation you could find on it? I wonder if getting another point of view might make it easier to understand..

I took a look at what I think may be the way in under the keyboard. It seems that the LCD panel needs to come off via the four screws that are at the hinges on the back of the unit. The hinge covers and the deck panel that include the trim for the launcher buttons and the Ferrari 3000 emblem are all one piece of plastic. I am also suspecting that the two rubber plugs in the bottom corners of the LCD panel allow for retraction of the hinge pins that seem to only be fastened to the outer hinge sides. The left inner hinge seems to carry the display cable to the panel. I have never taken this apart. It is only my observation. Good luck!

...my 512 MB SODIMM is still gathering dust (in its anti-static wrap of course).

why don't you call Acer?
I wouldn't because they will ask me to send the notebook to them. I wouldn't have time for that since I need the notebook for work. They also would probably not install my crucial RAM. If I ask them for instructions on how to disassemble the keyboard, they will ask for my serial number, and they would tag that down and would be a case against my warranty.

awww crap...

so i take it the chassis for the F3000 and the Travelmate 800 are different enough that the instructions for disassembly don't apply?

SoDimm installation

ITS EASY Whugster...
1. remove 4 small screws. there are 2 of each on the back of the hinges
2. on the underside there are 2 screws each marked eith a 'K' undo these
3. lay ferrari flat and fully open screen as far back as it will go
4. GENTLY lift the flap (with the on/off buttons) upward and outwards
5. u will now see three screws above the function keys, undo these
6. Carefully slide the keyboard up towards the screen and it'l just pop out
7 u can now see the ram slot

No seals and it was an acer engineer who told me how to change my RAM.
Hope you get it ! )

Nice one there InTheBeginning. I'm gonna do that right now. I just upgraded my drive to 7200 RPM too.
