Ferrari 3000 - Page 9

Sorry, I did not mean that I would immediately rip apart my laptop to form a new one to my liking. I know that is not very feasable. I am just thinking that in the long run, an AMD 64 DTR proc. and a 256MB graphics card would be a fine upgrade for an old Ferrari 3200.

And ah yes, the waiting game. I have actually considered buying a nice gaming/multimedia laptop for quite some months now and the closest I ever came was a Eurocom model, which in the end was a bit too pricey and too big for my liking. This laptop, however, is practically perfect. A 64-bit proc. and a graphics card that can reach the 4-thousand marks in 3DMark'03 make for a perfect combination! And all for only 3-thousand Canadian! I believe the thin+light form factor is a great added bonus, aswell as the Ferrari design (and the IEEE and etc.). I can't wait to read some initial impressions and reviews about this laptop. Shame the 3000 got such bad reviews on American sites when its loved in all of Europe and Asia.

What I want is a better bios.

My friend has this same exact CPU (XP-M 2500+) in his freshly built desktop, and has it overclocked to 3200+ speeds. I want THAT in my F3000!!!

I'm pretty sure you can't replace the ram module on the gfx card because I've never done it nor even heard of it being done on a desktop card even. (not saying that it's not possible, just that I've never encountered it...) I'm not sure if upgrading the gfx card itself is possible but one of these days i'll get around to opening this thing up and posting pics... Then we'll find out lol =)

I have a question for the Ferrari owners - did you ever have problems caused by overheating? My lappy gets slightly hot near the touchpad, and very hot on the bottom. The heat itself doesn't bother me, but I'm worried that this could lead to more serious problems...

Yeah it heats up for me too. Apparently it's the damn hard drive that's creating all the heat at the palm rest, to the left of the touchpad. I wouldn't worry about it unless you'll planning on keeping that lame old 4200rpm forever hehe =)

WOW... you went from an XPS to an F3000? That must have been quite a shock lol =(

Right... as opposed to sticking in a 7200rpm drive, which would probably make the computer catch on fire within about 20 minutes

Hmm i'm not sure about that...

several people here have upgraded and they haven't complained... YET... =)

i've heard from several places that the 7.2krpm one uses the same amount of power though. and same power usage usually means same Joules of energy lost per second due to heat, right? right? no. oh well.

Hi ppl

Just got my F3000 and it looks stunning

My first notebook so im pretty new to this, got a question ..
Played a DVD and it use ~70 % of the CPU, is this normal?

I put power to desktop and CPU runs @ 1.86Ghz

Regards,
Mattias

I think this is since the Mobile Athlon XP CPU clocks down if possible to save batterylife when running of battery power. If plugged in, watching DVD should not require 70%. If you get 70% usage while plugged in, I have no idea why. You can change these settings in the power options in WinXP I think. Perhaps you have it set to Portable/Laptop or Max battery or something?
I put energy options "desktop" + when AC plugged in CPU is 1.86Ghz constant

I still get 70-80% CPU

let me check how much cpu load it takes for me to watch dvd

brb
Even if it is using 70% CPU during DVD movie playback. I cannot really see a problem because what else are you going to be doing with the remaining 30% while watching a movie at the same time

I usually have a window with music dvbs or dvds in top corner when doin somethin else thats why

I don't know if a mobile CPU like the Athlon is alot slower then a normal Athlon @ same speed? But a more normal figure wud be 20-30%.

My 2.8Ghz P4 use 5-6% when decodin a DVB or DVD stream.

Ferrari Questions

Hi,
I've been doing about 2 weeks of research on the Acer Ferrari 3000 and I have to say it sounds like the perfect laptop for me. I was hard pressed to find a laptop with 512 MB RAM, DVD+/-RW drive, and 128 MB gfx card.

I appreciate all the posts that have been made on this laptop as it has helped answer nearly all my questions. In the description of the Ferrari on eBay that I may bid on, it lists the memory as 128MB shared. I emailed the seller asking him if it was shared or dedicated and he replied saying it was shared. This confuses me for two reasons:

1) I cannot find a single Ferrari laptop on the net that has 128 MB shared video memory besides this one on eBay

2) The seller seems adament on the fact that it is shared.

If anyone on here could offer some insight to this matter I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

The radeon in the 3000 is DEDICATED 128mb. Which means defo not shared there never was a 9200 ATI Radeon with shared memory.

You can rest assured that the memory is dedicated to the radeon and not shared and also rest assured that the seller doesnt know what he is talking about

If you can wait 2-3 weeks the 3200 availability in stores should make the price at retail and on ebay drop substantially on the 3000 series.

Then again you might want to wait the couple of weeks and buy the 3200.....

Thanks for the quick reply. I had a nagging suspicion the seller was just a dope.

That's also a good idea about waiting for the 3200 to come out so the price drops (or I buy the 3200), though the sooner I get the laptop the better.

Do you know what the specs are on the 3200?
What major differences exist that I should know about?
Can I expect the same quality from the 3200?

The 3000 is a solid machine from everything I've read. To ensure the same about the 3200 means waiting for others to buy the product and write their reviews, pushing the date back further as to when I will have the laptop...

Ferrari 3200 should be in peoples hands within 2 weeks.

Overall they have just improved the 3000 with a radeon 9700 128mb video card. 80gb hard drive, 2800 processor and slow loading dvd writer instead of tray.

As far as I can tell the chassis is the same on both machines so build quality between the two will not be an issue - in fact i think it will be better on the 3200 in that the slot drive is not as flimsy as a tray loading drive.

Performance wise at least on the gaming front the 3200 due to 9700 graphics card - I would expect almost twice the performance.....

I would wait personally and buy a 3200.

Ferrari 3000 vs. Ferrari 3200 ?

I've decided not to buy the laptop from that seller on eBay. I'll do some more research.

Availability is another issue. I live in the Czech Republic, and laptop availability is scarce here. We receive products of the same speed at about the same time, but not as many. For example, when I first looked into buying a Dell Inspiron, there were 7 or 8 available on the US website. The Czech Dell branch only supplied 3, and the one I was interested in was not one of them.

Now with the Acer laptops, it is possible to purchase the Ferrari 3000 here for 69,000 KC. That's approximately 2,500 USD, about 500 bucks more than anyone in the UK, Canada, or USA will pay. I highly doubt the 3200 will be available here for awhile, so I'd have to purchase it from a UK online retailer at best who's willing to ship here.

As of May 1st we're part of the EU, but the impact of this change has yet to benefit me. I'll keep you posted on my laptop decisions.

Thanks,
Kristof
