Ferrari 3000 - Page 2

I'm afraid I was only looking at the "thin and light" segment when I was looking for a notebook. (I bought the Ferrari 3000 not because it fit into what I was looking for, but because I MADE it fit. It just has that effect on people. ) From what you described to me, it doesn't seem like lightness and thin-ness is really a huge concern for you.

Furthermore, I really only extensively researched Dell(big and ugly), Panasonic(underpowered), Toshiba(overpriced, big, AND ugly), Sony(overpriced, underpowered), and Alienware(overpriced, overpowered) laptops as possibilities. I never considered compaq or HP because my friend has a Compaq notebook, and I can't say it impresses me in the least. I hate how they look and feel. Personal thing I guess..

From the casual perusing I did over at CNET, I haven't seen any other notebook that has a 4-in-1 card reader. I haven't seen any with a 128mb video card either. Some have DVD burning capabilities but most don't. However, all have USB 2.0 and Firewire. Not sure about resolution...

Firewire brand: Texas Instruments it says. What the hell I thought they made calculators..

Nope, it didn't come with a custom laptop tote by Targus, or any tote for that matter ... I picked up a Roots bag for it, which has a detachable padded compartment. It's awesome for me cuz I can put it in my backpack like it was just another textbook.

Not sure about the paint, it certainly seems durable; it hasn't flaked, faded, or cracked or anything...

Ferrari emblem: Yes it is recessed by about half a millimetre. They're definitely not stickers.

Light & thin is important to a point. I do not want to lug around an 8890 or the upcoming 8790. I would not even consider lugging around a 17" WXGA or WUXGA as the do not even fit into a standard case and are awkward. I guess that 6 - 7 Lbs. is fine with me and the thinner the better because it just looks and feels well, cooler.

I agree with that lure that this machine has. You can almost convince yourself that this is near perfection. For me that would be PM CPU with longer battery life.

TI is a preffered IEEE-1394a chip amongs digital video manufacturers for editing products. Which is important to me. This one gets another check mark for the "Pro" side.

Some of the die hard Sager users are paying upwards of $500. extra to get a fancy paint job by *********. This one already has it and it looks so professionally done. I happen to like Red. It goes with my bacheler days when I had a Ferrari Red Triumph TR6 roadster. It was my pride and joy and I had rebuilt every bolt on it from scratch. It was Red, Black & Silver with natural tan sheepskin seatcovers.

Thank you StormX02. You have been very responsive and a huge help. Do you have a PDA? Have you used Bluetooth yet? My uses will probably be a Bluetooth optical mouse and for auto syncing Outlook. Does this make sense?

I'm really thinking about this laptop pretty hard, this or a 4080 but can't decide. Hmm..

I hate these decisions.

gdame: Nope, I don't have a PDA and I don't use bluetooth, nor plan on using it anytime soon. I guess... it makes sense? lol I wouldn't know, I don't rely on email, and bringing along a corded mouse hasn't been too much of a hassle.

glad to help, good luck on deciding!

NervousXtian: I just wanted to mention that the NP4080 is 1.7" thick and 7.5lbs. Consider an Area51M or 5680 if you're going that route..

Well, Decision time is past. I ordered my Ferrari 3000 today. I also ordered a HITACHI/IBM TRAVELSTAR 7K60 #08K0939 60GB 7200RPM 2.5" Hard Drive ($250.) to replace the 4200 rpm one inside the Acer Ferrari 3000. I will load Win XP Pro and sell off the XP home that comes with it. The 60GB 4200 rpm drive in the unit will eventually be put into a small bus powered external enclosure for that extra space to park large files. I will experiment with various Bluetooth & USB optical input devices to find the one that fits best for me. To start I will try a logitech USB Optical Mouse for Notebooks (Red) of course! Also Logitec' Bluetooth Presenter Laser Pointer / Optical Mouse.

It will all be here on Monday and I will be setting it up over next week. I will keep you all posted. Thank You again StormX02.

I am also owner of an Acer F3000 and the only thing which is getting a little hot is the HDD and the RAM. Because under the Windows sticker on the left front side of the notebook the HDD and not the CPU is placed.

ohhh... thanks for clearing that up!

hey I just noticed something - there's a BUILT IN MICROPHONE!!!
which is awesome for me cuz I'm too cheap to buy a headset for CS hahaha
post #29 of 221
Where is the microphone located? Does it get disabled if you plug one into the mic input or is there a seperate channel in the multimedia audio control panel?

it's a bit below and to the right of the right hinge... look at the first pic in my review, it's in the very top right corner.

ijunno, there's a separate mic jack next to the audio out jack, so I would expect it would be overrided by anything you plugged in
post #31 of 221
Well that is cool. To bad they did not stick a liitle CMOS camera in the top of the display bezel like a lot of the Sagers. I guess a little clip on USB one would work just as well for video conferencing.

Have you ever tried one of those Gyration optical mice that you can also use in mid air? http://www.gyration.com/

oops i typed something wrong... I meant that I'd expect the built in mic to be overrided by anything you plugged in, fixed it now. i'd use the built in one though, i can talk normally without even directly talking towards it, or talking near it, and it comes out clear on the other side.

you gotta wonder just how precise a mouse you hold in the air could BE =P

Hows Halo run on this thing (looks good apart from a crappy video card).

Laggy w/ max settings, you have to settle for mediocre particle/texture/resolution settings in order to get decent framerate.

I have to admit that the name Ferrari is a tad misleading.... =)

Hi,
gdame mentioned upgrading the hdd to a 7200 one. Will the replacement fit straight in? Also, would the video card be upgradeable? Although i have managed on my thinkpad t21 for the last 18 months...

I am nearly sold on it and i can get it here (Ireland) and i am not sure whether sager will ship internationally..btw what is the best price availability in the US?

thanks

Can someone that has the ACER FERRARI 3000 please post their results for the following benchmarks:

3DMARK2001SE
PCMARK2002

I know that these tests are kind of old, but I just want to compare it to some of the other laptops I have been looking at, that have these benchmarks. Thanks for anyinfo.

3DMARK03: 1066

3DMARK2001SE: 4558

PCMARK2002: 4788 CPU, 3270 MEMORY (for some reason the processor was locked here at 1.5GHz even though the max is 1.89...)

Hey Storm & JD,

I have had my F3000 for a week now and it is a real nice machine.
I decided against ripping out the HD and putting in the 7200rpm drive because I wanted to get settled into it under warrantee for a couple of months first. I did not mess with the OS either. All I did was convert all partitions to NTFS. Yeah, they shipped it with all FAT32. I also had a huge task at hand I wanted to make this a replacement for my office system. I accomplished this with a piece of software called AlohaBob by Eisenworld. It even included a couple of data transfer cables. I used the 100BT crossover cable between my old office machine with XP Pro and the F3000 with XP Home. I ported over everything and it worked. I had to reactivate a few apps and reinstall a couple of things but it was really quite an elegant procedure. I would not call this thing a racer by any means but it is a very well rounded mix of features and performance at a price that is hard to beat. It it looks so cool. That factor has already earned it's rights the couple of places that I took it out of the bag. You might think that I pulled up in a Ferrari. All in all I love it. It is not a Sager and you should not try to modify it to be one. If that is what you want get a Sager and have it painted. I really like some of the new power machines and big widescreens. But they are just not very portable and easy to handle computing and communication devices. The F3000 is! My only gripe is that I wish it had better battery life. 2.5 hours is just ok. I orderd another battery today. Other than that everything works great and I am actually very happy with the screen at 1440 x 1050 & 32bit. Not one bad pixel! I am not a gamer so benchmarks do not mean so much to me.
