Ferrari 3000 - Page 4

think wifi is setup through static ip ranges. am tryin though.
I also have a question about the AMD: i thought also the main advantage over intel was the price and FSB. How do you find the battery? Do you disable AMD power now?

Don't they have faster Mobile Athlon XP CPU's now that are faster than the 2500, if not they should be making some in the future ??? If so, one could always replace the current one with the faster one, once the warranty runs out, also with the graphic's card, could not one also bump up the speed using the POWERSTRIP program ??? Just a thought.

I don't have any dead pixels, and neither does gdame, so it doesn't look like it's an issue so far. Nothing else seems easily broken, it's pretty solid.

Umm file copying isn't noticeably slower but that might be because my desktop's hard drive isn't all that fast either =P

JDELUNA:
Yeah you can definitely boost the speed of the gfx card using powerstrip, the default settings were like 1/4 max, but I didn't want to risk upping it.

I'm not sure if you can actually replace the CPU and gfx card though, it might be soldered in.

99% sure that the CPU is not soldered and just socketed, so it could be replaced with a faster one if one is available or when one is available. Also since you said that GFX card is only 1/4 from max, I would think that speeding it up some would help it get better benchmarks and help with gaming since some people have complained or said that SOME games seem kind of slow. I would think even just upping it another 25% in speed would help. What speed is the GFX cpu and memory according to the powerstrip program ??? God Bless.

Thanks StormX02. Happy to hear of no obvious weak points. I hope that if the HDD speed is annoying the HDD can be replaced the faster 7,2 krpm u' ve discussed already.
About the CPU: it would be very beneficial to upgrade it. Hope for the time of warranty (at least ) there will be no need to do it. However, it's worth studying the CPU exchange possibility.
Smb put the CPU is locked at 1.5 GHz or so, and somebody else added it can be set to 1.86 GHz by selecting Desktop form the power options. Why the figure is 1.86 and not 2.5 GHz or closer to it? Do I miss any CPU feature or smth?
The reason it runs at 1.86 Ghz is because the AMD chip you have is rough equivalent of a n old 2.5 Ghz P4. AMD did this because its chips were more efficient per clock cycle, but consumers shopped based on clock cycles. It is similar to the concept a 1.7 GHz centrino is a 2.4 Ghz P4.

I don't have the notebook yet but one of the things that I would eventually plan to do is replace the radeon 9200 with a higher one such as 9600, if it's true that the card is socketed. But I haven't seen any mobile video card being sold anywhere.
Why do u consider changing to 9600 video card? What are the problems with the 9200? Isn't the 128 MB of the 9200 enough? In fact I didn't dig in deep in the graphics performance since I'm not a gamer but'd be good to get more info.

The notebook finally arrived. Still looking at it. I'm wondering if I install Windows XP Pro, can I still install the drivers "smoothly" from the original CD?

Initial reactions? =P

I remember I was like "whoa?!... it's... bigger than I thought... hey the red doesn't look as cheesy as I thought... nice curves...ooooh hey nice latch!... kickin' bootup noises... blinky lights... I like!"

Installing XP Pro isn't too bad. You can get the original drivers here:

http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html

I had some problems figuring out the AMD power now driver, but all you have to do is go into Device Manager->Processors and click on properties and then install new driver. tell it to look for the file in the folder you downloaded.

My initial reaction? It looks like something bought from Estee Lauder. Well, that's how it looked like from the box.

Basically, I'm impressed with its looks. The thing is it doesn't seem like a computer until you open it or look closer. Stormx02's review is pretty accurate especially the warm area, the mouse being a little hard to press, and etc.

I did reformat the drive. It was pre-partitioned (2 FAT32 partitions). I installed Windows XP Pro using NTFS. I found the drivers on the recovery CD 1, which has a very easy to use web interface to install all the original drivers and utilities, including the ferrari desktop. I really never got to test it yet with a game or something, as I've been installing my needed apps.

Congratulations for yr new notebook Whugster! Today I looked very carefully at it in a showroom. It's teriffic.
Changing to XP seems good but I won't hurry to do it. Does somebody tried to install Win 2000 or Millenium? Are they supported with drivers?
I put XP Pro on and set up dual boot with libranet linux 2.8 (the only which worked well). Max battery seems about 2h 40mins. 1 dead pixel also. Acer stipulates 4 or more as faulty. Really happy otherwise!

Can any1 try the ferrari with this bench???

The Ferrari will handle FFXI with no problems at all.

I have a Presario 2810T with P4M 1.9 M964mb and run the game at XGA with no slowdowns at all. All visual effects on high.

Using latest Omega drivers, default DirectX settings:
High - 2546
Low - 3481

Also, I ran Sandra and it says the FSB is running at 2x133Mhz (266Mhz), while it also says that the maximum FSB speed is 2x166Mhz (333Mhz). So it looks like it's underclocked to compensate for the heat generated at higher speeds. And the BIOS has no options available for changing these settings.

Update:

Acer has an "online demo" out now, it shows the notebook at all angles and goes over all the features etc.

Ferrari vs. Travelmate 800LCi

I was able to return my new Travelmate 800LCi to J&R. Here is what I didn't like and hope it is addressed by the Ferrari:
- 800LCi is being phased out and the Ferrari is much more recent
- Poor performance as the 800 is a 1.4 Centrino. Shouldn't be a problem, for the Athlon-M 2500+
- Extremely loud DVD/CDRW due to the modular bay. It improved if I squeezed the sides. Can someone let me now if their DVD-RW is very loud?
- Loud/long fan when watching movies. Probably due to being underpowered. Can someone share their experience with fan volume?
- Only one memory module is easily reached since the other is under the keyboard. This is the same for the Ferrari
- Poor style. Definetely addressed by the Ferrari red
- Creaking on the lower right-hand side. The Ferrari's metallic face should not have this.
My other option would be an IBM R40 (Centrino 1.5) where:
- Ferrari has much worse battery life,
- the 2nd memory module issue and
- slow 4200rpm drive and
- average wireless reception, but
+ IBM R40 is larger, thicker, and
+ is ugly !
Is the IBM better quality/support?

This would be my only copmuter for programming, music, movies, browsing...
thanks

Hi,

I also have the Ferrari 3000 + XP Pro. The performances are just ok, but The FSB is fixed to 133Mhz and not 166Mhz . That makes the memory access at 266Mhz and not 333Mhz as stated on the specifications!

Any idea on how to change it?

Thx.
