Seagate Momentus 5400.3 - would you drop $400 for it?

Just read an announcement about the flagship perpendicular 2.5 drives from our buddies at Seagate.

The specs look quite good especially the power consumption compared to a 4200rpm drive.

Would you guys consider buying one once available or wait till they iron out any kinks with the new perpendicular technology?

I wouldn't sink any money into a brand new technology as it will surely drop in price within 6 months substantially

Capacity? 160 or better? But yeah, I'd wait for the next run of them because the capacity will increase quickly and the price will fall off at the same time.

Fujitsu is coming out with 200GB 2.5" drives real soon they say and I'd like to see what Hitachi has up their sleeve. Gonna have notebooks with 400GB's onboard in a couple months which is awesome.

They may have a model you can actual purchase within the next 2 years, so if you start saving now it should be no problem.

As far as RPM, I'm not sure, but since the data is packed tighter, 5400 may actually result in faster throughput than traditional 7200. Although it appears that they don't specifically say anything about that, which probably means it's not that fast. No way would I pay $400 for a drive if it wasn't at least as fast as the 7200 RPM drives they have now.

I'll wait until next year when I can buy it in the new dells at that time.

I looooooooove storage, the more the merrier my desktop had almost 1tb until i dismantled it for my 9300.

I have 80gb in my 9300 and 320 shared on a NAS and need more
$400 is a bit much but it opens the gates for more manufacturers to offer similar/larger sized drives for me!

where do ou see it costs $400? also the fujitsu 200 gb drives were announced to be released sometime in 2006. so it's only an announcement and even if accurate it still might not be out for 10 months or more.

Froogle.

Only two hits, one being http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST9160821A/

Probably will be safer to wait till summer to see other competitve units, though I'm a sucker for Seagate.
