8890 Opinions requested: send back for repairs or sell parts?

Thread Starter
I apologize if this is not exactly the right place for this post.

So...it appears my out-of-warranty 8890 has a motherboard issue and I've been given the option to send it back to Sager. I'd like some opinions here, and here's what I'm working with:

I'm not 100% sure it's a motherboard issue. So, I can spend the money to ship it to Sager, let them tell me for sure, and then make the decision to spend the approx $500 to have the motherboard replaced if that is the issue. Or I could luck out and it'll turn out to be something simple. Mind you, I've checked the simple stuff so I'm pretty sure its not just a bad RAM chip or something of that nature.

This is a 2-year-old laptop, and has started to show its age. I can build a new desktop computer that will kick its butt for less than $500. Sure, it's not portable, but still.

Assuming everything else in this laptop works, is it better to just sell off the parts? Or is there not so much of a market for 8890 parts out there?

Thanks for your opinions/advice.

I too thought the MoBo repair would be cost prohibitive, but I was wrong. I was having fan problems that only a new MoBo would fix. I sent it off to Sager and the repair was less than $100 with shipping. I was expecting a $600 bill minimum. I didn't ask how much it was going to be, but having read this board I was expecting the worst.
Don't sweat it, send it in for repair.
Of course, I was able to give them a reproducible, easy to see problem. If your problem is transient, wait til it is a MoBo for sure.

well don't replace the mobo if that is what they diagnose it as. i would suggest building a desktop, or if u need portablity, just get a new laptop since the graphics on the 8890 is a lil outdated and not very good for current gen games

or use the drives and cpu in the 8890 in a desktop

I need the display

If you still have the Sager 8890 and are selling it for parts I would like to buy the entire top cover and display.

Do you still have it?

I just sent my out of warranty 8890 in for RMA repair. Liquid spilled into it.

They'll charge $45 to diagnose. I'm hoping its under $250...

Anyway, I'll post my experience here.
