Laptop for Client Meetings

Thread Starter
Hi,

I’m hoping for some suggestions regarding the selection of a laptop. I mainly plan to use the laptop when I am visiting clients in their homes and offices. It will frequently be used with a projector, but sometimes the client(s) and I will be looking directly at the screen together. In addition, I sometimes like to be able to work in coffee shops for an hour or two at a time.

To be used for:
-Presentations in front of clients using a projector
-Presentations where the client and I are both looking at the screen together
-MS Office
-Working in coffee shops

Will not be used for:
-Games (beyond simple games like solitaire)
-Programs with complicated 3D graphics

Need:
-To be able to hook it up to a projector
-Screen needs to be viewable from multiple angles
-Wireless Internet
-Plug into my office Land Line (Ethernet I think)

Cost:
-I’d like to keep the cost under $1,000 but am willing to pay around $1,200 if necessary.

How much should I expect to spend for the kind of laptop I just described? How should I go about picking a laptop? I’ve spent the entire day reading buying guides and reviews and feel lost and overwhelmed.

Thanks in advance

The Sentia m3400 should be a good choice for you. Its classy enough that your clients will notice it. Its also can be config. for what your doing which isnt much. I could config u one if you want.

You could also get a 5500m for around 1200. It has a bigger screen.

If you can find one the best Bis notebook ever is the hp compaq nc6000
one button presentation, all the ports you need built like a tank.light, great battery life, hell I spilled beer on mine no effect what so ever.I had had IBM T40
and the nc6000 is a much better notebook, the keyboard is outstanding.Try newegg, tigerdirect, ebay they go for about 1000 with a nice config.I got mine at
a computer show for 948(new).I have owned notebooks when they where 12lbs
(1991) and of the 23 I have owned the nc6000 is the best built ever.

look for a widescreen,17" would be my choice, you wont need a top performer, but for presentations you might want a large HD @ 100gb,a celeron {400mhz} processor would be cheaper and and plenty fast,if playing movies maybe a gig of ram, still pics 512mb ram.

absolutely not on the 17" monitor, that is hardly a laptop built for an on-the-move business person. you should stay around 14", wide or not. Recommendations:

Dell Lattitude D610, may be somewhat expensive, but play with the configuration

Dell Inspiron D600, similar to D610, less sturdy build

Dell M140, 14" widescreen, good reviews, integrated graphics only, not a huge deal, still enough for presentations.

On this page: http://www.xmeld.com/html/msimain.html (other resellers are available for MSI notebooks as well, this just happens to have them all on one page)

MSI 1012 or 1013 12" screen, vga out, small size perfectly luggable

MSI 1022 14" widescreen, dedicated graphics, study build, not flashy, not huge. very good notebook for the price.

HP's business line is a little overpriced, but you can get a decent laptop for around your price range. Even the 15" is pretty cheap and not too huge.

Then theres the ever popular IBM/Lenovo T43. Good screen, very thin, great build, almost perfect business laptop. Might me out of your price range depending on your configuration.

And toss the Asus z63a on there for good measure.

15.4" lappys may be about as high as you seem to want to go, but from what i've gathered, 14" is just about perfect for screen size and portability.

So yea, any of those would be good. Good luck.

Luckily, there are many laptops out there will satisfy your base requirements. I think the differentiators in that price range will come down to the opinions people form about you based on the tools you use. Things like the appearance, or design, or name brand of your laptop come into play.

I'd recommend the Dell 700m. Under $1200 with coupons. Design is plain and conservative enough for you to be taken seriously. Name brand is well-known enough for people to think that you're not just running some small thrown-together shop in your mom's basement (who in the mainstream has heard of MSI or Asus? To most people, name brands that are not well known are either super high-end, or some cheap Korean knock-off. And you don't want them to think you're someone who has to buy cheap knock-offs).

It will do everything that you need it to do, and be small enough that you won't have difficulty carrying it around from place to place. Has a nice, bright screen with wide viewing angles so that multiple people can look on at once.

And keep it clean. You can tell a lot about someone who has a dirty laptop, or someone who is meticulous enough to keep their laptop clean.

Yeah, nc6000 is the best biz notebook to-date. You can't find a better one in newer laptops, because newer tech is inferior to that used in nc6000. Sad but true.
